That's not good. Why did they do that? Shoes should be fit with at least 1/2 inch or 12 mm or so, of extra room beyond the longest toe, or you can get serious bone deformities, plantar fasciitis, chronic ingrown nails, and other painful trouble. My parents were very thrifty and didn't spend any money unnecessarily, but they did see to it that I had properly-fitted (albeit cheap), shoes at all times.
I hate going barefoot, as I always find a razor blade or a thumb tack to step on.... If not that, then a dead frog, or ??? So I wear shoes everywhere except in bed.
