Great job with the cartoon greenturtle74! It helps explain what being an Aspie is like in a really understandable way. I just joined the forum, but there is something that I have been wondering for a while. When I first heard about the autism spectrum, I wondered if I might have Asperger's because I can sometimes be socially awkward and have always had trouble with eye contact. However, as I am in training to be a clinical psychologist and have even had training doing neuropsychological assessments for autism, the more I know, the less I think I would actually fit the criteria. For example, I don't have difficulty recognizing faces or emotions, I don't have problems with sensory overload, I am actually very good at reading other people's body language and understanding what something might look like from another person's perspective, etc. Yet, I still identify with some of the socially-related panels in your cartoon (e.g., eye contact sometimes interrupting truly listening, not wanting to be around large crowds, etc.) What do you think you would say to someone who self-diagnoses as an Aspie when they might actually simply be shy/introverted?
I'd say you know yourself better than anyone. What label is helpful to you? If it helps you to identify as an Aspie, then it's likely that you are. And if you feel that you're not, you're not.
