I don't believe that!

I was one of the first generation children (my father was a scientist) who didn't get vaccinised as a baby, one of the reasons were mercury. At this time nearly anyone even though about side effects about mercury.

And you know what the "funny" part is about this? 8O
I turned out autistic anyway!

The only reason I would like a "cure" is so that I could experiment with perception. I want to alter the way my brain works just so I can see things in different ways and from different perspectives.

I've been Autistic all my life so I would want to be able to see things the way NTs do just as an experiment. I'd just be curious and that is why I'd want a cure.

If a way were found to cause and remove various other neurological quirks I would be into that too.

I've adjusted so well that a cure to me wouldn't hold any practical benefit but I'd still want it for other reasons.

I voted but worry about validity.
I was diagnosed before the world knew Mr. Asperger existed. The conditions back then turned me against the system no matter what.
I hear it is better now so I joined this forum to check

I think that the topic of the 'cure' was already elaborated in X-Men 3. We don't need a 'cure', we need to be considered equals, either we'll proclaime ourselves superior.

Oh, sure. Thimerosal is mercury, and table salt is just like inhaling chlorine.

Also, a can of tuna has more mercury than any vaccine preserved with thimerosal. When are we going to start hearing about how "Chicken of the Sea" is causing autism?

I'm dead against a cure for AS and other ASDS. You can't cure something that's not a disease or an illness. I'm also against the type of cure that Autism Speaks is looking for. Their idea of a cure is Spectrumcide or genetic testing that would lead to the abortion of unborn babies who are on the spectrum. It's bad enough that scientists had to develop such testing for down syndrome babies. I feel that all genetic testing should be done away with so that the entire human population can have hope for the future of all mankind in the 21st Century. Every baby that's conceived deserves a Birthday and a chance at life and nobody's brain should be messed with, no matter what.

I feel the same way about such a "cure" as I do about god; namely:

1. I would need a clear definition of it to pass judgment at all - just "cure" is ambiguous.
2. I don't think one exists anyway and
3. The specific ones I've heard proposed, I don't like the sound of.

A lot of people would say that regular use of Ritalin is a cure for ADHD, and that is just as much a illness as Asperger's.

I am against a cure for people that don't want it. If they could invent a cure it could be helpful for people that are very low functioning and/or have a low quality of life.

I'm opposed to it for my own reasons, but if someone else wants one I don't see why not.

Should I even bother quoting all the research that disproves that theory?

There is no research that disproves that a specific subset of autistics acquired their autism via environmental factors, such as exposure to the aggressive vaccination schedule that kids undergo these days. I suspect their numbers are so small that they are washed out when they are simply categorized as "autistic" and lumped in with all the other autistics for whom vaccines had no role in their autism. I believe if we were able to separate out the various conditions that are currently called "autism" we would be surprised by what we find.

I, personally, am in support of curing people who have acquired an illness that alters their original state of being, if that is their wish. I do not believe in altering people to fit society's expectations just because they are different. It makes me sad that some people would accept that kind of "cure," but I can't deny them of it if it is what they want.

Do people really say that? Who? My son was on adderall and his neurologist specifically stated it would not cure him, but rather ameliorate some of his symptoms while he took it. It did not change his frontal lobe and while the characteristics of his ADHD are now without the "H," he very clearly continues to have frontal lobe function abnormalities. With or without stimulant medications.

It's also like saying a prosthetic limb is the cure to a missing limb. Sure, it helps a little bit, but the problem never completely goes away. And a missing limb is considered an impairment, not a disease. It's similar for ADHD or Asperger's, despite them not being a physical problem.

First, they took mercury out of vaccines in 2001, and there are still a lot of autistic children being born. Second, there are countries like China where children are rarely vaccinated, and there is still plenty of autism there. Third, research suggests that autism has a genetic component.

It's possible that the reactivity that parents observe to vaccines in children who later turn out to be autistic is not the cause of autism but, rather, the result of it in some way, something that would make sense particularly if autism were an autoimmune disorder. Anyway, we don't know, but there is no evidence that vaccines have anything to do with it. I, personally, like the Vitamin D hypothesis better, but even here, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that Vit D deficiency is a cause rather than a result of autism.

Correlation is not causation.

It appears the poll results have proven my hypothesis wrong, at least within the context of the Wrong Planet community which may be either better adjusted or worse adjusted socially than the HFA population at large (hard to say, but given the number of HFA individuals I know IRL who don't come here because of the "negativity," I have my suspicions).

So women who get raped should have to carry the fetus to term? Sad to say, but your side lost last November.
