Welcome !
same here, 39, just going through the Q & A so to speak, and said almost word for word what you mentioned today.... fighting my whole life for these crappy feelings, thinking it wasn't ""normal"", wandering how/what i could do to switch them off, only to find in many respects they are part of me, so now i can spend the energy elsewhere rather than trying to turn off a tap that cant be turned and to accept who i am
So in someways for myself i am going through quit a mental transformation, not easy shaking 39 years of searching!
Welcome aboard! I've got both of you beat (for very late diagnosis, anyway): I was diagnosed this year at age 49. I'm proud too, and relieved! I always thought I was crazy, or broken, or not trying hard enough. Now I feel like I can learn to stop beating myself up and be a little kinder to myself. It's been quite the journey of discovery. I have been telling family members, only to find out that two of my cousins are autistic, and that their parents suspected that my dad and grandpa were autistic as well. Even my mom is starting to wonder if SHE has Aspergers. It all makes a lot of sense, now. I never really thought of us as different. I thought everybody's parents took their kids to dig for fossils or go to operas, or had dinner table conversations about genealogy or the solar system. We're all a little quirky over here, and maybe that's okay.

Congrats
I was diagnosed last year at age 21, and found it to be a tremendous relief. Hopefully now you can start to reframe your life and understand yourself in a new light
BPT, I'm still waiting on my toaster; I think I was ripped off!

It not a toaster, but a bozo button award. But in all seriousness, welcome to the world of Aspie! I know when I got my Dx, I was able to reframe and better understand my life. Took me about 6 months to come to terms as it came out of left field for me. Never in a min thought I was on the spectrum, neither did my folks. I am adopted so little is known of my birth fathers side of the family. I have met and gotten to know my birth mother up till her passing this last April. It is believed I get most of my health/mental issues from his side. We know for certain my asthma and alergies come from his side. Take time to read up and see how everybody else handles life's challenges. This is what I did and am still doing. Finding tools to help me sleep better(weight blanket), calm me down and avoid a major meltdown and ward off shutdowns with the help of my wife and friends. Will you be seeing a therapist on a regular basis? I see one for my AS and it helps me tremendously. I can bounce ideas off her and see if I am seeing things the right way, or understanding it correctly. Many times I wasn't but with her help I am able to process it better, just still takes me time so I suck and always will suck in an argument or heated debate! Mikie ada the Artful Dodger.

Wow! Thanks everyone for all your reply's!
I have always been diagnosed as having Anxiety and Depression and I always knew there was more to it than that. I knew i was very different than other people and I've always hated being social and have crazy obsessions where I can literally spend days and days not eating properly just to get back to that thing i need to sort out lol..
It became very apparent for me and my wife when our little boy (age 3.5) started to show signs (tip toe walking etc..) my wife started researching and realised i have it too! We then started the process of getting diagnosed officially and that day came yesterday and i am in total shock and will probably take a while to come to terms with it. My Psychologist has allocated 5 additional sessions to use how i want.
I am employed as a cleaner and love my job as i have very very little contact with people and get left alone lol.
Thanks for all your welcoming messages and i really cant believe that i have the answer i have always asked....
