Ow and I think the "blank face" comment is more about dissociation. Like when you "space out". You just stare at one spot without actually consciously seeing what you are looking at, you're no longer aware of your environment in general (for instance someone can ask you something but you don't even hear it), don't think anything at all or actually think a LOT at once, and are completely in your own "world". At least I have this :?

"spacing out" usually only happens to me when my anxiety goes through the roof. I know what you are saying though. It's like horse blinders or tunnel vision. I am not sure if this is an autism thing or anxiety thing though. Check out this link on dissociation and anxiety.

Btw I'm new here. I actually found this site through Wikipedia when I was reading autism related articles.

Welcome. There is a getting to know each other thread here if that's your thing.

I don't think that example is the same as an autistic blank face. It's not stress related, and I don't think we're aware of it.

It's the same with situations where a response is expected, but it never occurs to us at the time.

From my perspective:

- Ridiculously compliant.
- "Zoning out" phases, in which I 'leave' the world for a while. I would surmise that this is where I appear to be at my blankest.
- Atrocious at reciprocating in social situations. When I am at my absolute worst, I either nod, nervously chortle or respond with one-word answers.
- Delayed responses to simple questions.
- Misusing complicated language because my mind tends to draw associations from synonyms and antonyms.
- Forgetting people's names.
- Delineating about something when it's either unnecessary or inappropriate.
- Interpreting language far too literally.
- Black/white thinking - maybe a BPD trait.
- Difficulties multi-tasking due to sensory problems (sound).
- Appalling concentration because of the reason mentioned above.

I've never had anyone tell me that I'm an idiot to be fair.

Also, I have never thought that anyone else was an idiot either.

Maybe it could be karma.

That makes sense to me - I have all of those difficulties.

I have found that sometimes people I've just met treat me like an idiot from the first moment when they know my diagnosis. This has happened most to me at the hospital of all places. There is also a sense of being sub-human there sometimes. The autism specialists were not like that at all but the secretarial staff were. I became a thing to them to be moved about and controlled and treated like a four year old.

When i was young i would take the bus to school, and there was this guy who took the same bus every morning.
He always wore a helmet and would make loud sirene sounds and flap his hands.
I also had a friend with an autistic brother, i've never met him and she never talked about it. But some other kids that had been to her house would tell stories that her brother was weird and crazy.
I know this sounds rude but i thought autistic people were mentally disabled. Now i have read into it and realise how narrow minded it was off me to think like that.
But it is lack of knowledge, so don't get upset when people think like that. Forgive them and see it as an opertunity to change their view on things.

Lots of good answers here but some of us also have comorbids like dyslexia & ADHD(I have both) that can cause us to have problems with learning.

Unfortunately, I'd have to agree. I feel sorry for the guy... err, girl (still not 100% sure how committed Chris/Christine is to their gender transition), but at the same time they have dealt quite a blow to many people's perceptions of autistic individuals.

I was pretty much all but outright diagnosed with ADHD, and I've long suspected that I have at least mild discalculia, so I'm kind of in the same boat.

Lots of people like to judge people by something they did not choose. It makes me extremely angry to see those discarding those with special needs, mental illness, etc. on that sole purpose, instead of judging their character.

Anyone else feel it ever felt like one of the Discarded Toys from the Rudolph animated movie?

Anyone feel teenagers is in itself a Co-morbidity.

The OP posted this a year ago. Don't know if he is still looking for an answer.

The question is why do people in HIS life lash out at HIM as an individual, and call him an "idiot"?

We would have to know more about his life, and about specific instances.

But it must have something to do with his lack of social skills.

I can't stand it when people start threads asking questions without giving an example of what they're talking about. One line questions throw me off. If the OP posted an example after his question, I would have been able to elaborate more.

I feel that I'm on The Island of Misfit Toys, sometimes. I feel that my mum put me there almost two years ago. I'd rather be on that island wearing my helmet than in a store with her, trying on clothes.

I felt like trash in high school. Not Asperger's enough to be real Asperger's but too Asperger's to be normal so my symptoms meant nothing to my family and I was expected to get over it and I had to be the bad guy for my anxiety and meltdowns and for getting upset. Then of course my mom blames it on being a teenager totally ignoring what I went through  I feel she is trivializing what I went through when she calls it all normal and being a teen and all teens feel that way. I should tell her next time "yeah, I wonder how many of them have behavior and how many of them have tremendous anxiety and have daily meltdowns?"

I felt like I was on an island by myself my whole life even with my own parents who were aware I was on the spectrum. My mom suspected me of being autistic since I was a toddler but my GP said "Nick's just being Nick". I had LOTS of meltdowns with my parents cuz they didn't really understand my autism or my other physical & mental disabilities. When I had meltdowns sometimes my mom would threaten to send me to juvie, kick me out of the house, send me to military school, or put me up for adoption. She still threatened to kick me out of the house or have me arrested when I had meltdowns with her as an adult sometimes. I was only living with my parents cuz I didn't have any other options. I didn't have the rite diagnoses or was disabled enough in any one area to qualify for services to help me me out & be on my own or anything. Thankfully I'm living with my girlfriend now who's also on the spectrum & has some physical & mental issues so I feel like I have one person who relates, accepts me & understands me.
