What were the adults thinking? How did a special education teacher think that was ok?
Well not sure every special education teacher really cares for the well-being of their special need students. If anything to me I am kind of amazed this kind of abusive treatment towards special needs kids or even kid who are just a bit different(like I was due the aspergers)...is just now being recognized, because it has been going on for decades. I even faced a bit of abuse from a kindergarten teacher I mean I didn't really recognize it as such, just thought I was doing something wrong for her to treat me how she did, but yeah it was so long ago but I remember my mom was pissed about it. Like I even thought she was mad at me for not telling her sooner how mean the teacher was being. I don't know what all transpired but I remember after I told my mom about some of it she went to the school pretty angrily and not sure what all transpired but i certainly never saw that teacher again. So Idk if she got fired or if I just got put into a different class and she kept her job as a mean teacher. But I remember my mom was very angry about the whole thing.
I mean like one time I got freaked out because there was a fire alarm drill and the noise of it startled me and it upset me I was like 4 years old and hadn't really ever heard a blaring siren like that so it scared me. But instead of the teacher trying to comfort me....she took my socks and said I could not have them back to put them back on until I stopped crying like a baby. Then another time during snack time I had made a mistake about what I wanted and tried to correct it just saying I mean the other thing, but she decided that was grounds to have me sit out snack time but having to watch the other kids eat their snacks as punishment for being indecisive I guess. I mean those are just two examples but aside from that she was never nice to me, and its like she made a point of pointing out my flaws to other kids. So IDK that mean lady could be part of what has lead to my social anxiety, she just made me feel like I was inferior and had no value. But not sure I was ever really able to get over it. I mean she literally took some of my clothing as punishment and wouldn't give it back...so certainly made me feel like my feelings and security were just things other people had a right to and there's nothing i could do about it. Like what teacher ever thinks grabbing a distressed student and taking their socks and demanding they stop crying or you wont give them back is the appropriate response?Like no 'its ok, its just a fire alarm....just mean grabbing of socks and demands that I instantly stop crying I mean that certainly only freaked me out further. Like what the hell mean teacher lady, what did I do to deserve that crap?
I mean that teacher is probably dead by now(she seemed old when she was my teacher) and that was the early 90's like I was either 4 or 5 so either she's dead or very, very old and in a nursing home so not really worth trying to make anything of it, but I do just wonder if that early experience kind of contributed to the struggles I still face now.
I also remember later on I actually got in trouble in a christmas singing program practice, specifically for 'not keeping up with the singing of the other kids' like I got in trouble because I was off tempo and not quite matching the other kids singing of course I was not the only one but yeah like its not like abuse never happens in school. So that is why I say its surprising that its only just now starting to come out more, the reality of the places parents are obligated to send their children to all day.
