Okay, I have people obsessions (as well as a big obsession with Germany!), and the people obsessions change every year or so, although the Germany one is there constantly.
My person obsession at the moment is with Lemmy Kilmister (from Motörhead), and I get super obsessed. For example, I heard on the radio that some event was on on the 24th December and I grinned and shouted out "That's when Lemmy was born!!"
And when I listen to Motörhead, the sound of Lemmy's voice makes me go extremely hyper after about 10 minutes or I hear a line in a song which is satisfying to my ears and I run round screaming with delight and flapping my hands if I'm alone 8O
If I'm with other people I bite my finger to stop me screaming of joy. Also I cannot get Lemmy out of my head, I talk about him constantly because I just can't focus on anything else (apart from when I am at school and I am working on something very structured and not vague in any way, for example, finishing a sheet in biology, or when I am very interested in something, like German.)
If something isn't structured I go off task easily, and think of a way I could possibly include Lemmy in my work
Does anyone else have a person obsession this strong?!
Oh yeah, and this isn't something I want to (or even can) get rid of. I tried deleting a few pictures, but I cried and I got them back

You are obsessed with germany? LOL you have to live here for a while and your obsession will be GONE GONE GONE.
I live in germany as a foreigner. you won't like it. seriously. they have a saying here. Es ist nicht alles Gold, was glänzt. get that translated.
Other than that, obsessions are not good. well your's are rather harmless and ok. but they can get nasty and sad and obnoxious. try to get rid of that. I mean not the obsessions. Try to get rid of being an obsessive person altogether.

Possibly Aspie (diagnosed by an autism expert, doc moves abroad, forced to change docs and all say it's schizophrenia NOS or schizo-affective disorde or personality disorders. initial doc was a colleague of uncle Simon btw. you do the math.). (edit: by Uncle Simon I mean Simon Baron Cohen. Just to clear things up.)

Is there something stressful going on in your life? I notice that I get way more obsessive about stuff when I'm stressed out about life. I conciously choose to be obsessed with stuff I enjoy because I know my mind will pick something to obsess on. Try finding ways to reduce stress in your life if you can.

If you really want to tone down your obsession try learning some German. To control my Jewish obsession I study Hebrew. I used to think about Jewish people all the time and it kind of tortured me. After I learnt some Hebrew, I got extra obsessed with Hebrew for a bit. Eventually the obsession mostly faded away. I brought back the obsession because I've been stressed out lately.

An obsession is bad if it:
1) Prevents you from doing things, especially things that need to be done.
2) You do things that are harmful (stalking, etc)

I already know what that means- "all that glitters is not always gold."
Anyway, I have been on holiday lots of times to Germany for weeks, and I personally find that it is an amazing country and people are generally very nice, especially when you talk to them in German. I actually plan to live there!

I generally don't do either, especially not the stalking bit, since he is dead! And sometimes I get distracted from what I do, but it's not too bad.

I like Germany too, but then it's easy to see why: -Link-

Me? I'm obsessed with Naruto. He is essentially the poster boy for children with Autism.
The correlation between Naruto and the average child with Autism is so striking it's almost hard to believe that the Writer wasn't intentionally aiming for it.

Do you find obsessions with actual people acceptable?

I would say yes, so long as you don't break the law, like one of my friends did... >_>

I had pretty strong obsessions with my two ex girlfriends & the iCarly star, Miranda Cosgrove(I have a huge crush on her). I'm not obsessed with my current girlfriend because I started taking Neurontin/Gabapentin for my OCD & it kind of stopped me from having obsessions & I kind of quit having special interests but I can enjoy a wider variety of things.

Enjoying a wider variety of things is good.

It depends.

In my case, it would probably kill my university major, so it would not be good at all. (With my executive dysfunction, there's no way I could keep up with studying if I didn't study my favourite subject for fun all the time.) An obsessive interest can be a big strength sometimes.

An obsession with an ex girlfriend is less adaptive than an obsession with a field of scientific study, though. And if nick007 was tempted to act on that obsession in ways that bothered his exes, it could be a very good thing that he no longer feels that way. But it's not a good thing for everyone.

I see your point, Ettina.

But I feel like obsessions over a real-life person are dangerous. I don't see how your university major is ever going to take out a restraining order against you.

I think Ettina was saying that having an interest other than her major would be a problem.

As for people...;there are obsessions....and then dangerous obsessions.

First one, just gotta know everything about that person. Could also be hero worship.

Second one, just gotta know everything about that person so I can (Take your pick)
1. stalk them
2. have 'altars' of pictures and notes and scary things
3. crossing that line to taking pics and crossing out eyes (Saw that on TV, so that's why it came to mind)

So, depending on where you can draw that line, is it dangerous or just hero worship? For the record, all of the second example is creepy as all get out.

I've gone through several people that I've obsessed over in the hero worship way. Neil Armstrong, Mike Nesmith, Salvador Dali......

If I come across anything that has information on those people I will stop cold and either bookmark it or send myself a link of just read it. And, the information I collected and still collect could easily be categorized as 'obsession', just not dangerous.

So, yeah a bit obsessed that way.

Extreme obsession usually has a downside, it can blind us to everything else. But you're obviously aware that it's an obsession, so your vision doesn't seem to be particularly impaired in that way. It's the ones who are obsessed but don't know it that are in the most danger, I think. In general, a balance of activities tends to be a good thing I suppose, but I think I'm happiest when I'm allowed to pursue my rather circumscribed set of interests. I just wish I had more control over it, I don't like the feeling that I can't easily moderate my activities.
