If you look at American history, it really seems like we've never been in a situation of peace for more than 5-10 years at a time. The future is always uncertain, and the more you try to make it happen before it's ready, the more stressed you'll become. As much as I hate to admit it sometimes, I don't even pay attention to the news anymore. The same thing will happen no matter how informed I am, and the only input I really have is in electing politicians (who are not perfect and can mess things up despite having good intentions).
It's tough, but try to shut yourself off from political news sources and instead focus on news of scientific breakthroughs or other interesting things. That will keep you informed, but in a different area so you won't always feel either "out of the loop" or depressed.
I know.. I try to ignore it, to submerge myself into the corp. run news media, and the Anna Nicole, Britney Spears stories make me ill.
Heck I just bought one of those new iPods, and still I can't even get excited
