noises in my head!

i have looked in books on neurology and asked psychologists about this problem but no one seems to have heard of it before. i would really, really appreciate it if anyone responds to this topic, to give an explanation for these symptoms or just to say that they have experienced them too.

the problem is this: when i am exposed to an unpleasant noise (like a telehone ringing, or a fire alarm) i can still hear the sound in my head after the noise has stopped (although usually a quieter version of it). sometimes i can't tell if the noise is actually still there and i have to stop what i'm doing and concentrate really hard to work out if the sound is real or not. i think everyone sometimes get annoying pop songs stuck in their head after having heard them but this seems different to that because it's so realistic. i also get phrases that i've heard stuck in my head (repeating over and over) but i've never mistaken them for being external because i understand that it's not possible for them to be coming from anywhere else.

i have a similar problem with physical touch. i can still feel the sensation of something being in contact with my skin after actual contact has stopped. also, after playing a simplistic computer game, like tetris, i can see the shapes in front of me hours after finishing which is very annoying and a bit scary. i can live without tetris (i think most people will agree with this!) but the other symtoms are unavoidable.

This sort of thing seems somewhat common for people on the spectrum.
I remember discussing this type of thing a while ago here. It is the product of strong focus I think. Probably the cause of echolalia. I'm not sure if there is a name for it.
You can use this to your advantage though and attain a great deal of peace if you learn to choose and control what you are concentrating on. In buddhism it is called mindfulness, which means the ability to keep something in mind. Many people spend years tying to attain such strong focus through meditation. So you should consider it a gift.

I have the same thing happening with me. My mom's cell phone was ringing last night, and I was still hearing after it stopped ringing, but it was quieter.

The thing with the games happens to me as well. I was playing EverQuest II, and I was fighing these dog-like monsters called Gnolls. Even when I quit playing, I still saw the Gnolls for a few hours.

I used to have this problem, briefly, 3 years ago when I was doing my GCSE's. I was so stressed out with exams that I thought I was going mad!

On my final day of exams, I came out of school, and the Church bells were ringing continuously (there must have been a wedding or something). Well after that, all throughout the summer, I kept hearing bells, even though there is no Church in my village.

Its gone now, thank God, but I would attribute it to stress.

When I'm on my pill I sometimes hear voices. I hear small phrases that get me to write songs. Too bad I can't hear music, so I can add it to my lyrics.

hmmm. I always thought that this was normal.

The last word in the last sentence spoken to me will echo for hours (or at least until spoken to again or on falling asleep) and likewise, I will feel touch for a good half hour.

I'm pretty used to this, so this doesn't bother me (other than the touch) and does not interfere with life for me.

this happens to me sometimes. I was wondering about the sound from tV's and computers and stuff. ever sine i was little I could tell when one was on because it gives off sort of...well it's not a ringing, I can't explain it but it's a sound...

That kinda reminds me of when you see a bright light and then even after you've looked away you're cells are still firing and you can still see almost amorphous blobs of light.

Maybe it's something like that but with your ears and skin?

yes. I finally got someone not online to understand it! my mom hears it too. my Brother never could though, and he always teased me for hearing nosies ...

Very high pitched and almost like a hum in the ear cavities as well. I can hear it through walls and tell if someone's tv is on (if I can't already hear the volume of the tv, itself).

I always attributed it to very good hearing. Which I have.

same with me. not sure if it's from good hearing though...

I can hear the tv's hum also. I've gotten so used to it I ignore it, now. As for feeling skin contact after the fact, the only time that's happened is after being intimate with my boyfriend, who also felt the sensations hours afterward, one time, even while shooting video of the university's football practice on top of a tall tower.
