Ok so I have severe social anxiety, but also new terrain, roads, routine breaks, etc can be super stressful.

I tend to feel my stress not in my brain, but directly in my gut. Like horrible stomache pains and cramping.

Well since I don't notice the anxiety mentally, all the slew of antidepressants and anti anxieties I have tried never ever did any good.

Well this time I tried just taking an immodium before the horror started. It took care of the pain and cramping and all was fine. It was the best plane ride I ever had!! ! wow I can't believe I never tried this before... don't treat the anxiety, just treat the symptoms of it.

I only have taken half of an immodium once in my life. And only once in my life because I became constipated for 3 weeks as a result. And that was with fiber and all that.

I'm glad imodium worked for you, but I would strongly advise against using it in this way.

It really isn't recommended unless you're actually having diarrhoea, as it decreases gut motility quite significantly, and can result in constipation, and then rebound diarrhoea when the constipation finally shifts.

If your main anxiety symptoms are lower gut cramps, you might benefit from something like hysocine butylbromide instead, though I don't know if you can get that over the counter in the US. It is available in the UK for gut cramps associated with IBS (under the name Buscopan), and is very good. It also doesn't result in constipation.

Magnesium helps me with anxiety and it has no side effects (unless you take too much in which case it has a laxative effect).

Rescue Remedy dear, best thing ever... it's homeopathic so you can't overdose on it but it does the trick, calms me down a treat, and believe me I can take anxiety to some pretty extreme extremities!!

I also get anxiety in my stomach (and depression too, but its a different feeling), but its in my brain aswell usually. I find that normal antianxiolytic drugs work like Xanax or bromazapam on both brain and stomach. Alcohol also helps sometimes, but can make the gut pain worse and I try not to make a habit of drinking just to stop feeling anxious.

I suffer from anxiety, and I took Rescue Remedy for a few weeks last year...but it didn't relieve my anxiety. Whenever I would take it, it would cause me to feel depressed. Maybe it's because Rescue Remedy contains a bit of alcohol.

Could be, though the alcohol isn't strong enough to anything.

There are other bach remedies which are made for stronger anxieties and specific fears, I've found they work well (for example, when I was forced to kayak at school which I'm extremely phobic of). They don't resolve it completely but they definitely make things a lot easier to cope with.

Imodium (loperamide hydrochloride) is an anti-diarrheal drug. You should also be able to buy Loperamide in a cheaper generic form from your pharmacy.

Imodium works by reducing the muscular contractions of the intestine, which reduces the speed at which waste moves through the gut. This in turn lets the body absorb more water and electrolytes from the gut contents back into the body, which means firmer and less frequent bowel movements.

What symptoms does it treat?
There are two main varieties of Imodium. Imodium AD stops basic diarrhea symptoms. Imodium Advanced (or Imodium Plus) treats diarrhea plus bloating, pressure pain and cramps.

I’ll try that since it will save burning incense, but since one said it has alcohol in it ill probably hate it lol. But then on the site I am on what's in it, it does not say it has alcohol in it..

Alcohol is the just the agent they use to put the actual remedy in, kinda like a preservative. You can get it in tablet form too which has none at all, you just dissolve a couple under the tongue. You can't taste the alcohol anyway, you literally use about 4 or 5 drops each time on the tongue. Tastes a bit grapey actually.

I'm glad to see someone finally mentioned alcohol... I opened this thread expecting to see something like "30+ year old single malt Scotch...".

I despise the word "gut" and can't figure out why people, intelligent I might add, can't wait to use this gross word.

It's stomach folks. Let's be civilized here. You gut a fish. Gut is a spitty smelly boyish word--you know blood and guts and all that stuff.

Then we grow up and become more refined and we say I have a stomach ache not a gut ache. YUCK.

Why oh why do people insist on this word? It sounds so primal.

Personally I love using a variety of words I can't really choose some as being more simple minded than others, just different images created.

The word guts is a more visual, (yep gross) word and thats kinda why I like it.

But hey thats just me.

It sounds a bit hocus pocus but they work really well. I remember Mum used to give it to us as kids when we were stressed or wound up or anxious and she said we used to calm down a lot with it. I still use it now as a 'grown up'.
