would you have been able to do what Vincent Cerf did in terms of laying the technical groundwork for a proto-Arpanet?

like if there weren't even a hint of computer in my 1965 world, I'd probably get out of my bathrobe and get dressed at least, ready to go to the library which would occupy much of my spare time.

just think of how many more of us would be also making bunneh farms in the absence of the primary digital distraction?

I just had a thought :? - if it was 1965 and I was in better shape [like if I was in my 20s] I'd spend a LOT of time at the gym, the time I waste here on WP developing my mind ;) would be spent instead developing my physique. Image

Because I am not a 'telephone' person (and never have been), it would be much harder staying in touch with my friends and family, particularly those who live in other cities and countries. It would also make it very difficult to stay informed about the latest research, in my areas of particular interest. The internet fufils both purposes for me, social contact and research material, and if it ceased to exist, I would probably spend the "freed" time in my garden, the library, and live much more in my own little world..

sounds like a peaceful existence to me :wtg: do you know any old-timers in academia who could tell you how they kept in touch back in the day, and kept abreast of current developments in their fields?

Aunt Blabby, I am one of those old timers! We read journals, which were available in the library - they couldn't be borrowed and had to be read there, and we spent hours (and a small fortune) photocopies items of relevance. Then in the good old fashioned way, if we wanted to follow up with authors, we used good old snail mail until (wonder of wonders) fax machines came along, which we wore out very rapidly, and we discussed a lot of stuff with one another so that no-one had to everything themselves, we shared resources to a point. It was enormously time consuming. The various libraries of the university - the medical library, the main library etc were in different places, too far to walk between - OMG life was busy then! However there was very good librarian support via interloan from other distant libraries and universities in other countries, it was amazing what a good librarian could source (they weren't all good, some were unhelpful grumps, but the goodies were very good indeed),

Before the internet! I would go to the library and just sit in a bean bag in the corner and read just about anything there for hours on end. I liked the library environment. It's was always quite there.
