I know, right? Like check out this French orphan girl:

WHAT a b i t c h!

you are quoting a drawing of a girl for a play? it really doesn't fit the context.

Her face was drawn on purpose so she is perceived as sad. Which means the assumption that not smiling only leaves 2 choices for a mood is incorrect.

if you have no smile or frown, people usually assume you are upset/sad. Not bitchy.

whether you are perceived as happy, sad, or bitchy has more to do with your eyes than with your mouth.

Case in point. No one would complain that she is not smiling. yet she doesn't look angry. And would be perceived as pleasant (or possibly sad)

yet no amount of "mouth" smiling will make this guy look any less like Emperor Palpatine

Yes, that was my only point. That was just the best known non-smiling face I could think of at that moment.

I understand it feels awkward, ( I know because I didn't used to smile in pictures), but try and get used to it. Try and be a LITTLE neurotypical. Have a happy attitude.

I almost never smile, and when I do, my smiles don't vary too much.
People at Target always told me to smile or else I don't look approachable, and they told me I hated my job (because I did not smile so I looked unhappy) but I did like my job.

I thought a smile was something that just happens because of something humorous or a good time, and you don't have to purposely do it. And when it does happen its briefly or for a limited period of time.

I just don't see the purpose in smiling at all given times purposely, if you do you look like that creepy enzyte guy.

perhaps you have missed the feature of WrongPlanet. We are a support site. We don't ridicule people, or personally insult them. We don't do this directly or indirectly, we can attack an opinion, a belief or a philosophy, but do not provoke others or anything else that purposely causes conflict with other members.

this post has displeased the rules of WP

if you are going to go againt the rules, you will be banned. It is just that simple.

wow sinsboldly that was incredibly selective. I guess the agenda of this site is completely different than you claim. Oh and you don't need to threaten me with a ban for pointing that out, I'll gladly go to a site run by good people. Bye.

first of all I hadn't claimed it to be anything, and of course I made it selective. Why would I need to bring in the rules for sig. lines and avatars when that was not what you were bumping into? I wasn't sure why you wanted to be on a web forum before you learned what the rules and regs were, anyway. Sorry this site does not suit your purposes.

An image that puts part of what I'm thinking into persepective. Fake, and unnatural. :) And the commercial it comes with though? It just seems more like he's thinking "OMG! Help me!"

All of which is really beside the point. The OP brings up a valid issue. The responses have been remarkably varried: From the trantrumous, "I don't wanna, I don't wanna!" to the more amiable "Would it kill ya to put on a happy face?" I mean, with a varitable army of people helping you out each week, a smile is a very small price to pay, don'tchya think? Certainly you have the right, we ALL have the right, not to smile. All you haveta do is ask yourself how you want to be perceived: As a friendly person or a b i t c h?

I guess NocturnalQuilter is not tyring to be offensive, but I find the quote to be incredibly offensive. Most of us probably agree that if we smile, most people will probably have a better opinion of us; we'll get along better and fit in better. That's also completely irrelevant. What you are apparently unable to undertand is that some people cannot smile (in a socially-appropriate way) on cue. For myself, sometimes I can and sometimes I cannot; I can't predict when or explain why. I find it interesting that no one expects someone with a low IQ to understand quantum physics, whereas "normal" people, almost without exception, expect people who are socially inept to just "suck it up" and act "normal." Sorry to cause those people such incredible pain in having to deal with people like me, but it just doesn't work that way.

Wow, what a great attitude you have toward someone who was attempting to be civil. I'm glad you think you are entitled to come into this forum and criticize the attitude of people different from you.

If I'm happy in the picture I'll smile. If I'm not happy then I won't. I have a fair amount of pictures that show me smiling, not-smiling, looking worried, angry, and ecstatic. Most people won't point at my pictures and yell 'HEY! SHE'S NOT SMILING! SHE DOESN'T GET THE JOB/HOUSE/CAR/BOAT , ETC.''
