Quote:
Jablonka and Lamb’s frustration with neo-Darwinism is with the pre-emi-nence that is ascribed to undirected, random sources of heritable variation. The meaning of ‘random mutation’ is frequently misunderstood, however. The variation generated by mutation is said to be random if it is not directed to produce a predetermined adaptive end. However, the focal sequences around
which variation is generated occur in highly non-random locations in the immense realm of sequence space because of the cumulative effects of past natural selection. The non-randomness of a focal sequence can be considered to be a measure of the accumulation of evolutionary information. The source of this information is the environment, broadly construed.

Modern neo-Darwinists posit a two-way flow of information between genotype and phenotype that is an implicit consequence of the recursive nature of replicator dynamics. Effects can be causes. Genotypes interactwith the environment to produce phenotypes and then phenotypes interact with the environment to determine which genotypes are replicated to become the
focus for the next round of ‘random’ mutation. By this process genotypes comes to refer to the environment and to have purposes with respect to the environment. There is an irony in appeals to Lamarckian processes to find a purposeful-ness that is lacking in neo-Darwinism, because I am yet to hear a coherent explanation of how the inheritance of acquired characters can, by itself, be a
source of intentionality. Rather, the intentionality of Lamarckian systems is always built into the system, and must arise by some other process. I find Dennett’s concepts of ‘cranes’ useful in this context. Dennett defines a crane as ‘‘... a subprocess or special feature of a design process that can be demonstrated to permit the speeding up of the basic, slow process of natural selection, and that can be demonstrated to be itself the pre-dictable (or retrospectively explicable) product of the basic process.’’
(Dennett 1995, p. 76)426

Systems of adaptive directed mutation and epimutation exist, but these are cranes. How else could their purposefulness have originated except by natural selection of ‘random’ mutations? Our ability to learn from trial and error, and from observing others’ behavior, is a very powerful crane that generates purposeful behaviors without the wastefulness of natural selection. But the ability
to learn and the kinds of things that we can and cannot learn are themselvesproducts of natural selection. There is no reason, in principle, why a system for the inheritance of acquired characters cannot evolve by natural selection, given a strong enough selective advantage and appropriate genetic variation. One can imagine a system that detects the hypertrophy of a blacksmith’s arms, signals this hypertrophy to spermatogonia in his testes, and there causes anepigenetic change that results in his sons possessing more muscular forearms. But, how could such a system evolve, if not by natural selection? There is no problem with a telegram being sent in German and delivered in Chinese if the message passes through the hands of a German–Chinese translator in transit

http://www.evolutionnews.org/2012/10/ep ... 65091.html

The article from the above link is short and easy to read and I recommend reading the whole article. (Actually all the material linked to is pretty easy to read and worth reading.) Below is a quote: I must add that personally I do not believe in the inheritance of acquired characteristics. I think there is another explanation (which I will not go into) for the phenomena being described, though some of the theory postulated in this article is kind of fascinating. The author is not really hard core presenting theory, anyway, just kind of speculating.

Quote:
It is "not out of the realm of possibility" that such processes work in humans. Morris cites a 2008 study on offspring of the Dutch famine of 1944-1945. Children born during the famine had distinct epigenetic markers their siblings born before or after it did not. The markers affected insulin production, and thereby growth. They lasted for several decades. Although these environment-driven changes might have occurred in utero instead of in the DNA, the study raised the possibility that epigenetics is a designed mechanism to help organisms cope with stressful situations, then rebound when the stresses are relieved.

If you really are autistic, it doesn't work. You aren't manipulative enough to make it work.

To the participants of this thread--and active reading and thinking is participation--is Sana Claus coming to your house tonight? if your heart is pure, he will come, but if you are filled with hate, grudge holding, resentment and rancor, that is naughty. All you will get in your stocking (interesting word:-) is a lump of coal (another interesting word)..

So what is the inner meaning of Saint Nick--Saint Nicholas and his reindeer. That is very interesting allegory. First, it is the darkest part of the year and for many, especially in ancient times, but even today, a very cold and, difficult, both psychologically and physically..,,,people can start to lose hope.....

Quote:
One doesn’t have to be a druid or belong to a coven to want to celebrate the longest night of the year. The winter solstice, which is ((was)) Saturday, marks the point in earth’s orbit when the North Pole tilts furthest from the sun. It’s when the sun appears to stop moving south and begin moving north. The word solstice comes from combining the Latin words for sun (sol) and stop (stit)

(http://middletown-ct.patch.com/groups/a ... stice-2013).

But people know there is going to be a shift and they build a holiday around that shift to look forward to that is very joyful and gives hope. So what is the meaning of Saint Nick? If you really think about it, nick can easily represents the dicrepency factor.. Basically there are somewhat diametrically opposed ways to interpret most anything. And what is Santa Clause but a pure space, similar a stop or a pause, out of which comes presents---the universe is gifting by turning everything around, but in order to be able to receive this gift ones heart needs to be pure. To co-relate is not enough, as the discrepancy factor in ones own thinking will distort things every time, and yet one still needs to think in order to be able to sort things out. This is the human dilemma, but Santa makes it all very simple: Be good; give people presents. Does it work? Yeah it does, but if you are thinking about what other people are (k)not giving you, you will carry it with you into the new year, so give up your hate, grudges and rancor on the spot, in the nick of time, lickety split:-) First it all comes to a stop, plain and simple...just let it go...Then you wait for Christmas with an open heart. If your heart is troubled, that is a fact of reality, so whatever you feel, feel it and be brave, but do not harbor a grudge. Feel the feelings, whatever they are, but dsconnect the mechanical thinking apparatus which is fueling these feelings. Then the world will turn around for you by Grace. And leave out some food tonight. Even Santa has to eat:-)

To the readers, anyone new please start at the very beginning of this thread and take a few days to read through or you will miss a lot of nuances related to some key material that is upcoming. No time to write for today but soon more about brain function and encapsulation and autistic encapsulation and also some comments on group organization, how it might mirror human brain function and how this may effect broader society. In the meantime here is a link to a message on the the subject of a group called Autism Speaks: Please look at it not from the perspective of approving or disapproving of that group, but more from the perspective of human brain function and how the mind can focus on one aspect while ignoring other sometimes important contextual information. Try to think about what could be the functional values, negative or positive of doing this.

http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp5825444.html#5825444

Also, for anyone interested in the parenting of autistic children, I will be talking about this subject on my documentary, using and we will be looking at a kind of interesting lifetime film called Speak as a learning tool.

To start off the new year: it appears very clear to me that people do not really understand much of anything about what is autism, yet they are acting as if they do, kind of bluffing it (and some are even making a profession of it), which is a big big bad. The tendency should be more in the line of enquiry, of questioning.

Secondly I see a big tendency toward approaching from a behavioral angle, and to me this does make a lot of sense, but a big and even tragic mistake is that psychological factors are being taken out completely so as to try to make it all cut off and detached behaviorism rather than a more sensitive humanistic behavioral approach. I will go into this in detail in the coming year, though I am not sure on which thread.

Thirdly, and this is understandable, I suppose, but kind of sad---there is this tendency for many (but not all) autistic people to group together and form a community around fighting windmills rather than enquiring into the dynamics of their own behavior. By doing this they are in my opinion playing the autism card, and this is in no way helpful to autistic people or humanity in general. but even harmful. Again, this is not to suggest that here or anywherepeople should not fight injustice or should not use WP as a possible platform from which to do that.

I think the most important thing to understand is that encapsulation is a basic principle of brain function, whether a person is autistic or not. Once this basic principle is understood, it opens a window to solving the conundrum of what is.autism. But please do not just assume you understand encapsulation, You need to actually observe how it works in yourself..

One thing that really bothers me is that people think they need to buy a book to learn about autism. There is helpful information in books, but if someone really understood something integral about autism which would help alleviate the horrible suffering of so many people, wouldn't he want to start sharing it right away? We do have the internet now. It really irritates me to see people hoarding information that will supposedly help other people. The truth is that when we pay for something you do appreciated it more, but once we invest our money in a book, then in order to get your money's worth, we are hell bent to read it, but on what basic criteria do we select such a book? The way we think, or better put, the way we are conditioned, determines what book we will select. So is there another kind of payment besides the purchasing of information with dollar bills? Making an effort to understand something and then put this understanding into practice is a form of payment.

What does it actually mean to take psychological factors out of the equation of autism? I know some psychologists will say they are not doing this, and it is probably true, but if you say a person is the way he is because he was born that way, this is essentially taking psychological factors out of the equation, and I see many people doing this. In short, no human being is the way he is today because he was born this way. If a person is physically disabled it may be because he was born this way, but this is not who he is.

It is kind of interesting is that these people are insisting on having a hand in explaining themselves to other people. I suppose if someone does actually understand his own autism, this would make sense, but what if such a person is confused? Put such a person in the mix (with other people who are trying to understand them but who themselves may also be kind of confused and you only get more confusion, and yet keep such a person out of the mix and you get indignation, even rage. Who is to decide whop to keep in or out of the mix? It is a kind of conundrum, but there is ultimately a solution. I think conscious doing sorts things out.

Let's stop for a minute and look at intelligence. I have read from some people on wp that the intelligence of aspies is on a spectrum equal to that of the general population. I do not know what standard this was measured, but I have been to quite a few aspie functions in a major urban area and almost all of the people I met seemed to me to be noticeably smarter than people in the general population. Maybe I just felt this because I was with what I perceived to be my own kind, but this is unlikely. .And here I see so many people who are so much smarter and more articulate than me, which is a thrill.

One of the reasons I have chosen to write on this particular thread and delve deeply into some kind of esoteric intellectual material is that I think I am speaking to people who may understand what I am saying. How smart am I? Not very, at this point int itme, anyway, though maybe kind of, but I think that smart people might be able to understand me better, as they are more likely to understand anything and anyone better: What I am going to be presenting is some perhaps extraordinary concepts about the way material mechanically organizes and a way to potentially organize it that is not mechanical but conscious. We know that when we pay attention to whatever we are doing, then we see new ways to organize material. A potential exists that can only be actualized when we see new ways to put things together and/or take them apart. If a really smart teenager gets a radio or a computer or a car and takes it apart, then it is possible for him to discover how that device works. With ourselves as living functional creatures we cannot take everything completely apart and still be functioning at the same time, but there are ways to work with the discrepancy factor, such as to insert an anomaly into ones own functioning--for example, to do something a little differently and then observe the results, or even to observe ones own functioning at a time when one is lost in and identified with it, so kind of drugged or submerged. That in itself would be an anomaly.

I have some kind of brain damage from a lot of concussion and am in many ways just out and out stupid. I used to carry this very heavy laundry bag down the stairs when going to the laundromat. Now why would anyone do that unless they were missing seeing a connection? Anyway, one day I just saw it--that was lucky--and now I throw it down the stairs:-) .But after seeing this I started to wonder--what else am I doing? Except no cigar. How to see what you are doing when what you are doing is not seeing what you are doing? So not becomes a knot, but without knots we cannot make things, and interestingly, the consonant base n__t played backwards,. t__n, gives us ton, tone and tune as 'opposed' to note, net, nut and nit (the egg of a louse or other parasitic insect) and nat (natal and national). Point made.

For anyone who is a new reader here, you need to go back to the very beginning and slowly go through this material, even though you may think/feel you are getting the gist of it, or you will surely miss some of the most significant nuance that is being implied but not directly stated. Plus all of this material is intended to be interconnected and built upon, so what comes previously is part of the foundation for understanding material that will be given in the future..

This message is about payment and also about the functional value of understanding the inner language of word roots. In the next message will begin to get down to brass tacks about autism. It really bothers me that people do not know much of anything about it and are basically just pretending they do. I do not think that is very helpful. Much more questioning and enquiry should be encouraged.

Making an effort to understand something and then put this understanding into practice is a form of payment.

For any new readers, please go back to the very beginning and read the contents of the entire thread or you will miss something. The material on this thread is about group organization and potential group organization around the basic principle of encapsulation as relates to brain function, specifically autism, and like taking a course of study that is a little difficult to understand, or even like learning to ride a bicycle or do a new motor function, If you persist you will eventually catch on. Try to think about what is implied by "playing a card."

So being attentive is a form of payment.I do not think a person needs to believe in God to be able to grasp the concept of wanting to pay back for ones own existence. One has been given something in the sense of there is consciousness of having and receiving. A person can feel grateful for what he has without believing in anything. And one can want to pay back ones parents who sustained ones life as if it were their own life.

So what is the function of learning to understand the inner language of word roots? For one thing it is easy to illustrate through word roots how the principle of encapsulation works in a way akin to punning. Actually I just now thought of something-- look at the words puny, punt, punish and try to ponder them (pon same consonant base as pun:-)---it is very interesting...and it also gives an opportunity to begin to look at the letters, y, and t, though to be understood they would have to looked at in many different contexts, and also the letters "ish" as in wish, dish, fish, fool ish, child ish.

Two: Different people of different capacities are going to be reading these, so word roots can be a way of coding in information that is too difficult for some others to understand, or sometimes just a way to kill two birds with one stone.

Moreover, thinking about word roots in this way takes us into new areas of brain function where we can experience our own brains working differently..

I wrote this today on another thread, "About this autism card." started by someone else, presumably in response to some comments I made.

http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp5855317.html#5855317.

Quote:
To the person, RedEnigma, who just defined playing the autism card. Thanks. Yes, that is the generally accepted definition, and I agree with Verdandi, actually, that accusing people of playing the autism or race card in order to gain social benefits can be used to suppress people and actually too much emphasis is placed on accusing people of playing the race card, etc. Good point.

However when I speak of playing the autism card, I am speaking from a psychological angle, from the angle of autistic encapsulation and not from the angle of doing it to gain much needed help. It is kind of hard for people to sort things out in this respect, as both of these tend to get mixed up together, which is surely understandable. However this does not mean it is psychologically helpful, good for autistic people or society in general. I do not intend to get into a too elaborate discussion of the psychological dynamics of playing the autistic card here, but more to answer Jeni's question.about what I mean by this.

One of the key points which I intend to begin to focus on is that people have a lot of psychological dysfunction that becomes tangled with their "autism" (whatever this autism even means---could be just about anything:-), and this is all very confusing. Under the imo too broad label of being autistic there is not as much of a chance to begin to sort things out, and it really does tend to support various psychological dysfunction. This is a complex subject which I would like to go into in great detail, all in relationship to how the mind uses encapsulation as a form of protection and even escape, and then the thinking gets mechanically formed around this mechanism, yes, giving some psychological comfort, but ultimately causing even greater suffering.

New readers, please go back to the beginning of this thread and go through the whole thing, or at least starting with the Rapunzel material, or you will not understand what I am going to talk about next regarding encapsulation, which is, today, Rapunzel's hair: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp5746746.html#5746746 (page 15), or, better yet, start on page 11 as that contains the ant material, which is when this thread began to pick up readership, but it is necessary to read all the messages on each page to get the gist. (Ant is commonly used in classic allegorical material to represent sensation/details, so left brain function. http://www.wrongplanet.net/postxf240900-0-150.html (page 11)

Now, back to Rapunzel's hair: In order to understand the basic principle of encapsulation it is necessary to observe it happening in ones own brain function, which is very difficult but not impossible to see, and once we catch a glimpse of it functioning in ourselves, a door opens into a different world entirely, because now we begin to understand the basic principle of how the brain works--that there is always this interplay between fine tuning and general processing (as represented by the pun. Pun is an interesting word --P (as in push, put, pit, pill, pull, pat, pack combined with, or actually projecting into UN:-), which means not or can even refer to K(not) and can also represent the perceptual field sans named objects, so, since once named, always named, the juncture that occurs between the named and unnamed at the integration (assimilation into understanding) of new data., and this is a constant process in the waking state.

We also have come to see how the basic structure of language is related to simple shapes (ships:-), encapsulations, and that the fine tuning of incoming sensory impressions moves by the excretion (elimination of perceived to be extraneous data toward a right brain generalization that is ultimately expressed in action, be it an overt movement and/or an inner mental shift leading to present contextual understanding/incorporation, and we will eventually be able to work all of this back to much greater self understanding and freedom and also be able to apply it as educators and parents to relating to an autistic child so as to help such a child much more easily overcome great obstacles.

It should also be noted that language formation, ie meaning of words, can easily be connected with certain movements of the entire mouth armature, face, head and breath and this affects many areas of the brain...and it can easily be extrapolated that the people who designed sophisticated language, Sanskrit were consciously aware of this.. More on this later, as I just now see a new way to work with autistic children which is very simple and makes so much sense.

Oh, never did get to Rapunzel's hair...next message, maybe later today.

Now re hair, and then maybe go back and complete the Rapunzul story, and whoever has faithfully followed the material on this thread will now have some kind of understanding of not different parts of the brain and what functions they regulate, but how the brain actually works in regard to the assimilation of material moving toward integration that results in a moement, either subtle (such as understanding something) or gross, and understanding how this works will change your own brain and unlock a secret door in the world of understanding yourself and other people. eventually,

Hair is a symbol for left brain function---her, heir, here and hero. (Interesting if we reverse the consonant base, we get re (ray:-) Now if we look at "him" which represents in some way right brain function assuming "her" represents left brain function,it becomes quite interesting---we get home, hum, ham and here. Try to think about this and you will understand, even if it takes a few days. You can see how "home" easily represents encapsulation. The word "ham" I will just tell you relates back to the word "peg." If you really want to have a productive think, there is this saying, "you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear." So:-) And interestingly, if we turn "him" backwards we get mi (me).....Finally look at the word hero----this is very interesting as it suggests left brain moving toward right brain integration in the psychological quest of a human human being to become a whole person. here--O.

Too bad I don't have a pay pal account as about ten thousand dollars should be being deposited into it right now. Just pay me back by trying to understand not just for yourself, but with the ultimate aim of helping your brother..

Eventually we'll relate all of this back to the topic of this thread. I will use some of the ideas of one imo kind of brilliant but somewhat self-centered and entitled psychoanalyst, Bion, whose book I found in a free box many years ago but only recently read, to do this, and we will begin to discover if and how playing the autism card may be harmful to society. And of course if we turn this 'consonant base' of this premise backwards, we have the alternative to also discover how approaching from a different angle may ultimately be beneficial to society.

Please read the previous message, as it is integral to understanding what is to come. Anyway, we can go on with this word root thing for a very long time. It is kind of like 1001 Nights--a lot of hidden rooms keep opening up inside of rooms. We are finding doors into a different dimension, seeing that thought can take shape--every time we think it can't get any more interesting, it gets more interesting, at least to me:-) Repeating ideas will not take us to someplace new. It is necessary to think .Language is integral to understanding, and for those reading here whose first language is not English, the same principles of word construction we are discovering will apply to your own language, too---if you know the subtle nuances of a particular tongue, then you can see how sound correlates with meaning, and it is possible to cross reference between languages, but lets keep it simple here.

SO, I am thinking of location. Thought can create another dimension, and this can affect people. Ideas take shape. How this is done on the internet can affect the organization of greater society. This is for later, but is it possible to create dimensional parameters that allow for epiphany by making a new topography with ideas? How would this work, and could an understanding of the principle of encapsulation be applied here?..sO, if we look carefully we can see that to plant a seed relates to the consonant base p--g:-)

Now, everything relates to everything else. The object of knowledge, whatever we are looking at,.is the pivot between self and other, according to perceived function, so if a person has not completed a process, perhaps a developmental process, the object is going to be related by attributed meaning according to function to the project one is trying to complete. This takes us back to the relationship between mother and child. The child represent something to the mother, especially if there is some kind of developmental process the mother has not completed, as expressed by whatever she is trying to do at any given moment and also over the long term, but the child has his own agenda..Often he is trying to do one thing and the mother is trying to do something else. There are these different dimensions of relationship, entirely subjective, and no way to sort it out. If you pay someone to help you sort it out, that may seem hopeful, and it could be, but how do you choose the right person if you yourself do not know how to sort things out? There is always going to be the discrepancy factor, So where does help come from?

I think we can go back to the fairy tales and other organic literature of humanity to begin to understand the journey of the hero. (her-O)..

It becomes much more difficult to understand something if it is not linked in ones mind to perceived functional value, because then there is no reason to. It is not functional, so it is not interesting. We know that when a child escapes into reading it is very interesting because the story coupled with his own imagination gives him an opportunity to sort things out, and I think gives him an opportunity to connect with a certain substance within himself. So the material is of substance.

If I am reading, watching a show on t.v and/or thinking about something and it is holding my interest, there is some kind of functional value. I think there is much more interest when material is helping me to figure something out---but there is also some kind of value when doing an activity reinforces a pattern to not figure something out. For instance, if a person is going to make a protective psychological fortress, the function of which is never to face certain facts, it needs to be reinforced with thought bricks. To make these thought bricks, it is necessary to omit certain material, so as to make other material more compacted, but when actually figuring something out, when learning, it is also important to omit certain material, as extraneous and non relevant data will deflect a person from coming to a conclusion. If you have made a psychological fortress, again, the aim presumably to not (k)not figure something out. And this is an interesting term, to figure something out. We do not hear people talking about figuring something in, though we do have the word, configure. Remember, this is about brain function. Con is from the Latin, meaning "with," so how do we get the English words, pro and con? Because of co --(see and O:-). such as in correlate. And a correlation can serve as a stopper or buffer, so when someone gives you a set of false correlations this is how he sets you up, and when you go with it, you are conned..And people can do this to themselves. When we put two ideas together, we make a new 'location' in the brain. In short, everything is already interconnected, which, in a sense is bland, but by making various mental, physical and emotional connections we chart a new land, and this is a land made out of thought, but it is also real in the sense that it connects with the physical world, as the brain is physical and the world is physical, so in this sense, thought is material in that it is establishing and reinforcing certain areas in the brain. I forget the name of this one fairy tale, but the protagonist, the here-O who is probably the youngest of three brothers and considered a simpleton but has a pure heart is given an impossible task to complete in a certain limited time frame in order to win the princess. Here are two examples from Grimms Fairy Tales: The passages below are selected from The Queen Bee:

Quote:
Quote:
They all three traveled away together, and came to an ant-hill. The two elder wanted to destroy it, to see the little ants creeping about in their terror, and carrying their eggs away, but simpleton said, leave the creatures in peace, I will not allow you to disturb them.

Quote:
Next morning the little grey man came to the eldest, beckoned to him, and conducted him to a stone table, on which were inscribed three tasks, by the performance of which the castle could be delivered from enchantment.

The first was that in the forest, beneath the moss, lay the princess's pearls, a thousand in number, which must be picked up, and if by sunset one single pearl was missing, he who had looked for them would be turned into stone. The eldest went thither, and sought the whole day, but when it came to an end, he had only found one hundred, and what was written on the table came true, and he was turned into stone. Next day, the second brother undertook the adventure, but it did not fare much better with him than with the eldest, he did not find more than two hundred pearls, and was changed to stone. At last it was simpleton's turn to seek in the moss, but it was so difficult for him to find the pearls, and he got on so slowly, that he seated himself on a stone, and wept. And while he was thus sitting, the king of the ants whose life he had once saved, came with five thousand ants, and before long the little creatures had got all the pearls together, and laid them in a heap.

And these two passages are selected from The White Snake:

Quote:
Quote:
He rode on, and after a while it seemed to him that he heard a voice in the sand at his feet. He listened, and heard an ant-king complain: ’Why cannot folks, with their clumsy beasts, keep off our bodies? That stupid horse, with his heavy hoofs, has been treading down my people without mercy!’ So he turned on to a side path and the ant-king cried out to him: ’We will remember you–one good turn deserves another!’

Notice the word turn. I like that:-)

Quote:
But when the proud princess perceived that he was not her equal in birth, she scorned him, and required him first to perform another task. She went down into the garden and strewed with her own hands ten sacksful of millet-seed on the grass; then she said: ’Tomorrow morning before sunrise these must be picked up, and not a single grain be wanting.’

The youth sat down in the garden and considered how it might be possible to perform this task, but he could think of nothing, and there he sat sorrowfully awaiting the break of day, when he should be led to death. But as soon as the first rays of the sun shone into the garden he saw all the ten sacks standing side by side, quite full, and not a single grain was missing. The ant-king had come in the night with thousands and thousands of ants, and the grateful creatures had by great industry picked up all the millet-seed and gathered them into the sacks.

So this is all obviously about brain function, about psychological integration, which is why this kind of material is so meaningful to a child who, as he is progressing through a certain developmental stage trying to individuate, is wrestling with conundrums that are seemingly irreconcilable but must be reconciled or he feels he will die.

To be continued.

By now I have presented enough material for any serious reader to have a general understanding of how his own brain works by encapsulation. New readers please go back to the beginning or at least start at page 11.

This week let's take a careful look at the brief quote below which I posted previously), but this time in conjunction with some comments from an interesting blog I found yesterday about one scientist. Rupert Sheldrake.

Quote:
The Challenge of Pain by Ronald Melzack and Patrick D. Wall

Quote:
'The "real world" is a construct, and some of the peculiarities of
scientific thought become more intelligible when this fact is
recognized....Einstein himself in 1926 told Heisenberg it was
nonsense to found a theory on observable facts alone: "In reality..
the very opposite happens. It is theory which decides what we
can observe."'

D. O. Hebb 1975

And....from a series of blogs called Bruce Charlton's Miscellany:

http://charltonteaching.blogspot.com/20 ... drake.html

Quote:
Empirical data does not test or prove the validity of metaphysical theory - all of Darwin's examples from animal breeding and the diversity of species did not test natural selection theory - rather they are set-forth to illustrate the theory and its operations.

I regard Sheldrake's voluminous body of empirical work as having a similar function.

*

Taken together, Sheldrake's books and papers on numerous topics, his surveys and experiments, demonstrate that Sheldrake's theories of morphic fields do indeed (to a significant extent) 'save the appearances' - that is to say the theory is compatible with observed reality.

However, taken one piece at a time, each specific item of empirical evidence that Sheldrake (or anyone else) can bring forwards can be (and is) (if not simply ignored) explained using numerous other conventional ad hoc explanations...

One thing to note is that though he is making some good points, though points may not be quite the right word, as this material is in itself very generalized, I would like to enquire into this material in terms of its function. He is basically talking about our subject here, encapsulation, but, in short, he is starting from the right. Why do we start from the left, and what does it mean to start from the left? The prince could not even have met Rapunzel unless he climbed up her hair, though first, when he was in the forest (the woulds:-), he did hear her song and so become intrigued.

The previous message, quoted above, is completely redone, so please reread it.

If you read the entire blog post, which just takes a minute, the writer is saying that Sheldrake, who is a legitimate scientist recognized for his work in biology but often accused of being a pseudo scientist, is presenting a viable theory as the factual data he is selecting corresponds with physical reality at the juncture points (my terminology) he is selecting to illustrate his theory, and that this is a form of metaphysics or soft science (again my words) from which perspective what he is doing is legitimate, and I agree. What it all comes back to or down to is framing and the possible function which is achieved by an action which occurs from within this framework from the perspective of a person desiring a certain result. Of course other people who desire a different kind of result may object to a person making this particular kind of framework.

With hard and soft science there is no exact point where they intersect in terms of making an explanation. There is also an overlap of left brain detail with right brain generality that can only be resolved by an action. The mother of Rapunzel craved salad (solution, resolution), and her husband had to make a bargain with the witch (which:-), though when the prince finds Rapunzel and they are then separated and then finally united, there is an ultimate resolution.

Now take an autistic child. This child, or any child, for that matter, is framing the world according to his own inner theory which is greatly lacking in detail, and in order to do so he is using certain areas of his brain in a certain way and the more he does this, the more whatever way he does it is reinforced. Who is this child and what does he mean to himself and the world around him? Obviously, what he does mean to himself and the world around him is not reconciled, and I would say this is much more so in the case of an autistic child than with any child.
