Because I am not a 'telephone' person (and never have been), it would be much harder staying in touch with my friends and family, particularly those who live in other cities and countries. It would also make it very difficult to stay informed about the latest research, in my areas of particular interest. The internet fufils both purposes for me, social contact and research material, and if it ceased to exist, I would probably spend the "freed" time in my garden, the library, and live much more in my own little world..

sounds like a peaceful existence to me :wtg: do you know any old-timers in academia who could tell you how they kept in touch back in the day, and kept abreast of current developments in their fields?

Aunt Blabby, I am one of those old timers! We read journals, which were available in the library - they couldn't be borrowed and had to be read there, and we spent hours (and a small fortune) photocopies items of relevance. Then in the good old fashioned way, if we wanted to follow up with authors, we used good old snail mail until (wonder of wonders) fax machines came along, which we wore out very rapidly, and we discussed a lot of stuff with one another so that no-one had to everything themselves, we shared resources to a point. It was enormously time consuming. The various libraries of the university - the medical library, the main library etc were in different places, too far to walk between - OMG life was busy then! However there was very good librarian support via interloan from other distant libraries and universities in other countries, it was amazing what a good librarian could source (they weren't all good, some were unhelpful grumps, but the goodies were very good indeed),

well if you don't mind me saying, you seem much younger online! :thumright: you got to experience more of the "good ol' days" than I did, I think.

I'd probably become even more withdrawn and MUCH more irritable than I am now. Anger spikes would be frequent, if not perpetual.

I would be bereft of much wisdom I almost take for granted nowadays.

The internet was invented in 1969. It bore little resemblance to the internet we know today.

The video above is an uncannily accurate prediction.

in 1863, jules verne wrote a short bit called "paris in the 20th century" which predicted things like fax machines and telephones in 1960 paris.

If I were sent back to 1965, I would probably have a heart attack and die. :P If I didn't, then I would try to join a hippie commune, and tell them all about the future and such. If I were able to warm up to the climate of 1960s society a bit more, then I would try to become a student at MIT and join the computer science program, so I could hang out with the geeks and play around with the mainframes. :D

I'd still be able to go for walks and take pictures and read books and watch movies etc. But I wouldn't be able to interact with others as I can only really do that on the internet.

The blood in my veins is not made of oxygen and hemoglobin, but of high voltages and low voltages, of binary data.

I subsist on the internet. If you take away my lifeblood, then I will die...

I would also make sure to see The Beatles live in concert, and maybe fly over to Britain and catch some early shows from bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath a bit later on. 8-)

Just thinking about it, waking up in 1965 would mean that I would get to experience the mid-late 60s, the 70s, the 80s, and the early 90s firsthand! It would be so cool!

I think I'd be in complete shock at first and this initial shock would soon be followed by tears of joy. The internet being gone seems like a wonderful thing in a weird way to me.

you will only have to wait maybe 8 years until the first primitive BBS arrive on the scene, at least in the bay area.
