Are autistics crazy?

You have be really careful here about generalizing. Many who are autistic actually do enjoy the company of other people. What you describe sounds more like SPD. (Note I'm not saying you aren't autistic; the two often can co-exist.)

In regards to if autistics are crazy, I am reminded of the Shakespearean fool. The fool was the sanest and most honest of the bunch, and everyone else was pretty nutty.

Chief, maybe you are just going through a rough patch. You obviously want to make some kind of contact with the world outside of you and enjoy some amount of social interaction or you wouldn't have made your way to Wrong Planet. And also, maybe, because you are so isolated and Autism is not well known where you are you are experiencing prejudice and bad treatment that is not as prevalent in places where autism is better known and understood.

Fiddler, That's a great comparison. Also and kind of similar would be the Hans Christian Anderson story of The Emperor's New Clothes. Anderson is suspected by Michael Fitzgerald of being on the spectrum. Maybe Shakespeare was too.

It's interesting that Andersen wrote a fairy tale about sensory issues: The Princess and the Pea. :D

Some are crazy and some are not crazy everyone is individually different.

Not really. There might be some that are crazy, but there are some NTs that will be crazy too.

Ermm....I suppose it depends on the definition of crazy....being different isnt crazy, although some people think so..

Was Einstein crazy? (This was a rhetorical question,) He was eccentric, but I don't think anyone would call him crazy. I agree with Twyll- being different is not the same as being "crazy."

Autism by itself is not "crazy", though the behavior of some Aspies or Auties may seem crazy to outsiders.

The people I know who use the word crazy are NT or otherwise functioning well in society. I've been in several psychiatric hospitals to visit friends, so I've seen a wide variety of mental illness and neurological disorder. I don't use the word crazy at all at this point in my life, since it's like the word "nice", so overused and ill-defined as to be useless.

I haven't been called crazy. Things my mom does seem crazy though, and some things I do seem crazy to my family.
