Been there. Done That. But it wasn't a ceramic dog. It was a statue of a kid.
I went to visit somebody I hadn't seen in awhile. I knew she had kids. I hadn't met them yet (it had been awhile). As I go up to her porch I see there is a kid standing in the corner with his face to the wall, his face in his hands, probably crying. I rush up to him saying "are you ok? I'll get your mom!" As I get closer I see it's just a statue of a kid turned to face the wall and crying. I realized this as my friend opened the door in fits of laughter that I'd just tried to comfort her statue.
Once I'd seen this statuer (weird and freaky and creepy), I started seeing them at other houses too. Always a kid turned towards the wall and apparently crying into his arm. It was a frankly disturbing decorative trend that only lasted a couple years.
