"The researchers looked at about 2.5 million births recorded in California from 1996 through 2000. About 10,000 of those children were later diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, according to the state's department of developmental services.

Using data from birth records, the team found a strong link between parental education and the high rates of autism.

"In this particular case, we found 10 clusters of autism across the state of California. When we looked further, we discovered virtually all of them were areas where there was a higher level of education among the parents who were giving birth in those years," Hertz-Picciotto said.
"We already know that people with a higher education in the United States are more likely to get a diagnosis of autism for their child. It doesn't necessarily mean that autism occurs more frequently in those families," she said.

"It was also a greater likelihood to be white, non-Hispanic, and for the parents to be a little bit older.""

there is also a topic where this item is discussed: click here for the topic

on topic: I think asperger and autism are just a direction in evolution.

I really think that the technology has opened up new opportunities for Aspies. Yeah, many companies are looking for people with people skills, but because it's so new, many Aspies are creating their own companies. Not all will succeed, but Alex has something cool here, and you might create something cool too. You never know until you try. Either way, from your own home, you can create video games, websites, widgets, applications, etc. You can do all this and still live with mom and dad, and you can do it at age 13 if you have the ability and drive to do it. And, best off, because you are in charge of what you do with your own little company, you can focus it on your skills, and because of the WP, if you need someone whose good at other things, you are sure to find one here.

My thoughts exactly, that's what I'm doing at the moment! I'm 15 and learning how to program so I can make software. Hoping to make millions eventually. As in hundreds of millions. I'm gonna do lots of businesses and devote all of my time to it. It'll be worth it when I get a place on the Sunday Times Rich List :D

And, of course, it's also easy for any other Aspie to become that devoted too. They can also think logically which is important for programming and business, and some are visual and creative which is very important for creating new ideas you can sell.

I'm surprised there aren't more Aspie multimillionaires myself!

Hardly anybody has any respect for Mr G. His poster is on nobodies wall. People covet his money, but not his personality. The greed and dirty tricks him and his ilk will use to try and get every penny on the planet into their bank accounts without any care for the global good, makes him one of the most despised persons on earth. And the punchline is: he hasn't even got Aspergers! One day he's going to sue someone big time for suggesting he has it.

What the hell? Clearly you've never heard of the The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation?

I said he is thought to have Asperger's remember, because while he hasen't announced it (and why should he anyway?), he has a lot of the traits and people who know him have been told he has odd behavour caused by "a syndrome". I'd say I'm 99% sure he at the very least has traits.

Well, to play a bit of devil's advocate here... he could've easily set up a philanthropic organization at least partly to counteract any negative publicity he might attract from his actions with Microsoft. Companies and individuals with considerable public profiles do this kind of thing all the time. :?

That's true, but really this whole thing is off-topic. The point is, Bill Gates is a billionaire either way, and there's a chance he has Asperger's.

More on topic then... is Bill Gates a billionaire because of his (presumed) AS, in spite of it, or are the two characteristics unrelated? Because there appears to be an assumption that he is a billionaire because of his AS, and I would wonder to what extent social skills and luck had in his life outcome.

Considering the fact that he made his fortune by programming - something which requires logic and the right type of mind to do properly - I'd say that it was because of the AS traits.

Since almost all of us have such intense interests, I'd say that it's possible for any Aspie to make a successful business with the right sort of obsession (anything to do with technology is good at the moment) by expoiting the ambition and passion that comes with them. I also believe this because, in reality, anyone in the Western world can become rich if they really want to.

Actually, I'd say he made his fortune by being a ruthless businessman. Something that typically involves being unemcumbered by morality and a facility with lying.

Steve Wozniak was more the inventor/innovator type, but look at who is wealthier. In fact, if it weren't for Steve Jobs, the showman/promoter, Woz probably would be even less wealthy. Being a good techie in America is a good deal, but you get rich with your MBA, not your degree in Engineering/CS.

best at logic? think logically?

aren't people with asperger's.. i don't know... ILLogical? i'm trying overcome this vain assumption that i think more logically than family and peers. i have been told by my father time and time agan that i have a very different, skewed, WRONG sense of logic. the logic of an aspie is thorough, but unfortunately, bound merely to the parameters of said aspie's own fantasy world.

Seriously, you guys can analyze Bill Gates all you want, but there are other famous Aspies, just not as big as Einstein or Bill Gates (if he is or not). Anyway, isn't Alex Aspie? I think the WP is very successful. I'm sure it's not building him a mansion with a huge swimming pool, but still, do you have to measure success with money? As of now, there are 32, 252 members. That's impressive to me.

Then you got the creator of Pokemon. His creative genius and special interest in bugs allowed him to create something many Aspies are incredibly obssessed with, as well as non aspies.

I say go for it and don't let anyone hold you back. I notice in my life I threw away a lot of ideas I had that I wanted to do because people like my parents wanted me to do things normal... go to college, get a job. I've spent the last 13 years of my life failing miserably at that. I think the reason is if my Aspergers has my brain wired differently, then more than likely, I"m going to have to do things differently than most people to achieve similar results. So, if I want to make any kind of living in this world, maybe instead of the default college job thing, maybe I need to do something on my own. It sucks because us Aspies don't have a set formula that non-aspies have to work from that is more customized to our type of thinking. So we do work with a lot of trial and error, and many people around us who don't have Aspergers also don't have the patience for that, so don't let those haters influence your drive to succeed. But don't let me talk you out of college. Many Aspies thrive in an academic setting and wouldn't be where they are today if they didn't at least try. But that doesn't mean to throw away all your ideas to do it, which is what I did and I totally regret doing.

Me, I'm more the creative type. I just subscribed to this cool website... www.lynda.com to help me learn how to use the programs I have on my computer. I just bought Adobe's web premium for school last semester, except that I didn't get the software functioning before the semester ended, but I don't know how to use half the software it came with, at all. So this website is helping, though I hate the videos on coding and stuff because I'm so visual, and I really am brain dead when it comes to technical stuff. I actually watched a good hour or two's worth of videos on php and databases, and I still am not sure what all you can do with it (or even the big picture), but I have a better idea. Anyway, I have some business ideas with graphic design and publishing that I want to do, and I'm not expecting to get rich from it, but I hope with enough hard work, I can make something that resembles a real pay check.

I did watch this program on CNBC about google, and that looks like one of the most awesome companies to work for. Their employee benefits include, free massages at work, free work out / fitness room at work, chef operated cafeteria with about 12 or 13 different food booths in a food court, they do your laundry for free, and they offer free commute system so you don't have to worry about having a car to get to work. But, they have the greatest minds working for them. One guy was saying how he got his Masters from some Ivy League type school, and they used 12 textbooks throughout the Master's Program. The authors from 10 of those textbooks work for google. Anyway, as cool as that sounds, they were nice enough to kinda go into what new things google is working on, which could also translate as what google thinks is cutting edge technology that will boom in the next x amount of years. The one thing they are working on is phone applications... The one application they showed that they were working on was a visual search... you take a picture with the camera on your phone, and you get search results on it such as take a picture of a Diet Coke can and you can see all this info about Diet Coke. Comes in handy if you take a picture of a tourist attraction while you are on vacation, and boom, you got the history, fun facts, hours of operation, a phone number, etc. Anyway, I know if you ever want to get into phone applications, now is the time. The competition is high right now, and a lot of people are already in the system doing this, but I really think in the next 10 years, you will see more a boom in the applications, like we are at the first peak of a new trend. I don't think it would be a great business idea as much as project ideas. Some people have developed it into some business ideas such as social networking apps, but I guess it depends on what you are doing. I did see, on Planet of the Apps on CNBC, that some junior high school students built an application on the phone to practice math problems. I was so impressed that these young kids could do it. Either way, I'm sorry to go on and on, but I do think there is a future with that, so if you are a technical code like person, this might be something up your alley.

Heres my thought. If the world continues as it is with tech, then maybe those with AS will someday have a legitimate advantage.

However, it is just as likely that sometime in the next 50-200 years that we will either A) Have a mass regression and tech may "go away" for abit B) Kill each other off (WW III) or C)simply run out of power/bandwidth. C is a possible cause of A.

Which might then cause B because nobody would know how to handle life without their i phone, and we'd be in a world of crap if we had to start depending on people again for the things technology does for us (such as intel on the enemy).

Indeed, I was trying not be overly pessimistic though :P

I will add that mankind, as a species, is a social being. Even if you have trouble with such things, and/or rather avoid it, being behind a machine forever and never interacting is quite unhealthy. We need interaction to survive.
