Or, if that doesn't work/makes it worse, dress him up as a snake so at least he'll look cute.

That would just piss me off.

I like the second idea, though =)

MONKEY: Nope no joke. That's something I can see myself doing to my own sibling when I get pushed over the edge. That's why I wouldn't be a good parent to a profound LFA child. I wouldn't be able to handle the stress.

She does. But it makes it impossible to have a conversation when he's doing this incessantly.

Have you consulted a professional about it?

Yup. My mother is seeing his psychologist (or is it OT? I forget exactly which type of therapist it is...) about it soon.

What does the repeated "s" stim do for him? And what effect do certain pitches, rhythms, and speech sounds have upon your nervous system?

I wish I knew. He is entirely non verbal. No form of language at all.

Well a "hssss" sound isn't all that bad. He could be like the LFA guy who used to live next to my brother who used to scream intermitently every five minutes (I could sometimes hear his carer shout at him afterwards

Trust me, it is that bad. The noise drives me into rages.

I doubt you'll be able to get him to stop so the way to go is to ameliarate the effect on you. I recommend a white noise machine. The white noise machines seem to do more than merely drown out noise. They don't even have to be loud. They get your brain to put your ears on "filter" so that repetetive noises have less effect.

Cool. Where can I get me one?

You can get them from Amazon. They range from 30-50$ for simple ones that just make white noise to 60$ and up for ones that make all variety of noises like rainfall and ocean waves. The key is that they are repetetive and your brain eventually tunes them out and tunes out other repetetive noises along with them. It doesn't make the annoying noises go away. But it does make the annoying noises less annoying. It is a lot of money. But I've been using one since the 70's when when my parents bought it to make me stop fighting with my sister about her snoring (shared bedroom).

Janissy has an excellent suggestion there. I have an LFA son and when he is being particularly noisy and repetitive I listen to my ipod to drown him out.
