I always get taken by surprise when I realise that people can actually see me. I forget that I'm a part of the physical world and not just an observer of such.

Something similar for me is the feeling of 'now'. Once you think of 'now', it's not 'now' anymore and it's already passed. Like if you're walking somewhere and you're tired, it may seem like its taking ages but once you've arrived, it's like, you're now there.

it's hard to explain i guess :/

I understand that; I get the same thing with "now".

Interesting topic! I am not sure if I have ever experienced this or not, however I have experienced somewhat of the opposite...

I get this odd feeling, a realization of sorts, that other people experience life just like myself. It's odd. Almost as if before those realizations I didn't understand that. I don't know what to make of it, and I find it hard to fully come to understand and -believe- (as if it isn't true somehow when it is!) it.

Yes, I feel like that sometimes. More so when I was a child.

This is not exactly the same thing but it feels related:

I have a lasting memory of lining up with everyone for a class photograph at school and being convinced that I would stand out somehow. I couldn't imagine looking like just another child...

I have this constantly, 24 hours a day.. I thought I was the only aspie with this :) A doctor at a AS center told me that this feeling of depersonalization can come with AS. So I guess I finally have to accept Asperger now, I thought I had to fight against this feeling, well I think things can become better though and I can get happier with a good daily schedule and exercise which I do now.

I refer to that as "spacing out."

I'm not always startled by it, but if it happens and I realize it just happened, acting like nothing's wrong is a bit awkward.

I would really like to know if many aspies have this, if this is normal in AS.

Also, do you often look angry? I had quite a bit of pain in my life and with AS it's difficult to release grief, pain.. I look sad or full of hate too often :(

It happened to me twice, recently, that I can think of. Other than that, I'm unsure or I can't remember it ever happening to me.

This is a very extremely topic for me, so as ego-centric someone with AS can be I'm bumping this topic :)

I'm very familiar with tuning out, and I'm very familiar with dissociation, but I never get the two at the same time... It is strange to me that others relate the two.

I experienced a lot of dissociation when I was suffering depression. You stop really feeling. You only experience. You start viewing what you experience without emotion and it just seems like colours, sounds and sensations but it isn't REAL. It's just illusion... You could be imagining it for all you know... You don't know. It is a strange feeling.

I also get the same feeling if I hyperventilate or take sleeping aids.

Yep, I think it has to do with hyperventilating. I'm currently using an online program (in which you restrain your breath as long as possible, because of this you get a better breathing pattern over time), I certainly notice when breathing proper I get energy out of this, I feel my body more, but it's a long process of a good daily program, talking to myself, proper eating and exercise, which I do all to get a bit grounded.
