I do have these issues but I don't have a diagnosis, nor shall I be seeking one... I'm sick of getting more diagnoses! With me, I can't hear people speaking to me say, in my bedroom. Although to most it is 'quiet' in there, I can hear my computer buzzing, banging from downstairs (residential home so a lot of that!) a car passing outside, ducks, a cockrel (we live in the countryside!) and pipes running. Then the staff get confused when I don't respond or say 'whu?' Yeah I don't even say what anymore! I'm so lazy!

i can hear the words that are said, but my mind does not automatixally assemble them in the way that they are supposed to be heard.

example:

"the north sydney sea eagles are preparing for their first game against the south sydney team in 35 years".

i thought "why bother preparing for something that is going to happen in 35 years time"

when i hear that "all 170 people were killed in the aircraft crash", i do not know which 170 people were killed. were they all on the plane?

things like that i can not assess with much accuracy.

there was a news bulletin that said that "the dead australian soldiers from afghanistan are finally back on australian soil".

does that mean they were tipped out of their coffins and fell on to the dirt when they got back to australia?

who knows.

i am too tired as it is late and sleep is my destination now.

Well, with me, it seems like almost a disconnect. I hear FINE! When I am ready, I usually understand fine. I can't really say that the words are jumbled. Let's just say they aren't DISTINCT. And yeah, my discrimination between sounds is often off. I often don't bother listening to the waitress, I just place my order.

I first noticed I couldn't process words well while in college. I'd go to review my lecture notes, and notice that it seemed like someone else had written them. I couldn't remember hearing a thing that I had written down, nor could I remember anything that was said during the lecture.

I've developed what seems to be an unusual way of adapting to not hearing people talking very well. I have to be looking at them and focusing on them intently to "get" what they're saying. That means looking at their faces, the eyes in particular (I don't have problems with gaze avoidance) so to them it looks like I'm staring at them which can be a problem. If I'm not looking at someone, I can't "hear" them.

I just read the wikipedia APD article. I have hearing issues, but if I understand the article right, APD means you'll identify the words, but not the meaning. My issue is at a 'lower' level; I have difficulties distinguishing words from background noise.

Do you find that you like listening to music but can't make out the words? I don't get what's being said in musical, operas, etc

I have that problem with all music. Unless it's only like one instrument playing, I can't make out the words to any song. Hmmm, maybe this explains my avoidance of musicals.

I probably do because my mom insists that I am going deaf but I can hear just fine. It's just that her words come out as giberish. Hearing tests have always come back inconclusive.
