The lights, the crowds, the echoes, the smell of BO, the crying babies, the unknowledgeable staff, the sea of faces... Wal-Mart

Help me make a list of things would rather do than go inside Wal-Mart. I'll start.

Get my teeth drilled
Rub grandma's bunions
Stab a fork under my fingernail
Drink month-old milk
Wax uncle bob's back
Watch The View

 Wow, you really feel bad about going into a Wal-Mart then?

I do understand though, I hate overcrowded supermarkets and shops. I feel like I'm suffocating or trapped (or a combination of both) and that's horrible.

there isn't a wal-mart in london - england but i don't mind going out to shops at all as long as i don't come across things that freak me out. i suffer from quite a bit of visual sensitivity but it is worse when i am out in the countryside - bright flowers and butterflies trigger my phobic anxiety.

I will not set foot in Wal-Mart. I feel like white trash whenever I'm in there (no offense).

To go into a Wal-Mart, I have to blank out ev-er-y-thing! And when I say EV-ER-Y-THING...I mean ev-er-y-thing.

The throngs of people do things to my brain that wear me out mentally and physically! I have to plot out the path ahead to avoid bumping into people and steer clear of those who seem to wander aimlessly about the aisles. I literally have to calm myself down when I come upon people who leave their carts in the middle of the aisle where people are walking.

It's the same way in the shopping mall. I can't go there because there's just too many people there all wandering like lost sheep. It's too loud - it's like an overload. But I don't go bananas or anything. I try to blank it all out if I have to walk the concourse. But usually, I just go in through the department store I need to go to anyway; get what I need to get, and hit it!

The crowds and confusion and noise spark an inner turmoil in me.

OMG, I HATE Wally World.
I will do anything to not have to go in there. My wife will find something she needs in there that our Target that is closer doesn't have.
Out Target is clean, uncluttered and extremely well maintained.
Our walmart is chaos center. It smells, it is dirty, disorganized, things are never in order or straightened (of course I blame the customers as much).
One of the few times I went in there because we had the boys with us, one of the little guys need to use the bathroom, we went in there and it was so bad out then 6 year old said it was disgusting and could we go someplace else.

ASDA is a Walmart subsidiary. Probably not quite wholly owned by them, since they seem to be issuing stock options to UK employees under ASDA's name, not Walmart. However, Walmart must be in control since they consolidate ASDA's results on their financials.

Link to summary of international operations. They even use the same smiley face logo.

What's kind of interesting is that Walmart has walked away from both the German and South Korean markets in the past few years. But they're apparently in the UK to stay.

Actually Walmart caters to idiots regardless of race, color, creed or national origin.

Linky to People of Walmart Site.

Though I'd probably go there more often if I could see people like this: Go here(link).

But like this (link)? Not so much.

Things I'd expose myself to before walmart:

  • Flickering flourescent lights
  • Telemarketers
  • Door-to-door missionaries.
  • Cleaning the litter box

(On second thought, exposing myself to door-to-door missionaries doesn't exactly sound like a good idea. They might take it the wrong way and call the cops.)

Roflmao!! :)

My spouse insists on going to Walmart every week for groceries. We go in the middle of the night ~1am, but it's still pretty bad.

As for what I'd rather do, I cannot say anything more apt than what Peko said.

I go to Walmart every now and then with my parents. My mom shops at Walmart weekly to buy groceries. Sometimes, when I accompany my parents to Walmart, I make an excursion to the little sex shop nearby while they're shopping.

You can buy ammunition at Walmart in the US, right? That's way cool.

I'd go there for that, as it'd be one less stop (no need to go to the gun shop then).

Shop at Target.

I worked there for a number of years. I don't have sensory issues (I actually enjoyed working the opening shift on Black Friday, the most insane shopping day of the year), but I won't set foot in a Wal-Mart.

Yeah, I always went to Walmart at 3 AM to buy paint. Where else can you get another tube of yellow in the middle of the night? Nowhere, I tell you.

But apparently, I've been told, the craft section is gone, so I'd not go back.

I know what you mean, though; I had to go a few times during day hours and it was abhorrent.

I'd rather swallow a doorknob whole.

In our area, and a lot around us, it's not the craft section... but the LARGE craft section is gone, lol. We still have paints and paintbrushes, stuff for scrapbooking, etc.-it's all just in smaller amounts in a much smaller section of the store. Can't get fabric any more, or ribbon, or thread-stuff like that is all gone.

LOL-just read through the rest of the responses on here, and am having a pretty good laugh :)

Our Wal-mart is rough to be inside of... but easy to get to driving wise. Since I got into my accident with the dingbat that decided to drive 60mph off of an on-ramp (which leads to a right turn only lane), then swerve over last minute using no blinker at all while I was turning... I'm hesitant to drive anywhere far in my area.

We don't have much else besides Wal-mart either, unfortunately, unless you want to go to Walgreens and spend $6 on something you can get for $3 at Walmart, you're kind of stuck.

Nonetheless, it's definitely not an enjoyable experience. LOL to those links of pics on the last page. We never get many like that in our store... though there was one week I refused to enter it in after 2 nights of weirdness in ours.

After the Haiti earthquake... about a week or 2 later, I guess it was, we were in there and 3 guys who didn't speak English came into ours wearing all green and black, with black berets. They looked military like really, and were disrespecting all kinds of women while going through the store. At the end of the trip, they cut in line in front of this lady and just stood there when she said "excuse me, but I am in line and you just got in front of me". 2 of them ignored her, the other stood there grinning in a really creepy way and looking her up and down. I didn't think she should go to her car alone after paying, lol.

2 nights later, I went in, and I swear it seemed like absolutely nobody in the store had any manners at all, and none of them spoke English. They were intentionally blocking other people off, fighting with one another (verbally) very loudly all the way through, picking fights with other people, letting their kids run wild... and they were all paying with vouchers. I'm guessing it had something to do with the relief program that was going on. One of them actually told some woman in the store (after cutting in front of her in line) that it didn't matter what he did, she was just a woman and could do nothing about it... with a very heavy accent, lol. The employees were gathering in preparation to escort the guy and his kids out of there.

I didn't go back for a week. It reminded me of something from the Twilight Zone-an invasion of sorts... after that, they were *poof* gone. Was the most bizarre thing ever, lol. But now when I go in, that is my reference point to "oh I hope it's not like that again...."
