Well, you probably did need help by then. If you were desperate enough to make death threats, something sure needed to be done. But the shrinks often forget that mental illness, including the anxiety/depression combo that comes from long-term harassment, has a very large environmental component, and you'll never fix the problem if you don't fix the environment, which in this case included a bunch of people who were being absolute jerks.
My mom has suggested institutions, and so have more than a few doctors. (Yeah, same mom who doesn't believe I'm autistic. She tried to send me and my sister to a "school for troubled teens", only being deterred by the fact that vaccinations were required... Then later, when I talked to her about my problems with living on my own, she suggested an assisted-living place near where she lived, which apparently had shiny brochures that came along with it...)
It kind of scares me, because I am and always have been perfectly capable of learning all the stuff a person needs for basic self-sufficiency; and if they can say that to me, then what hope is there for someone who even needs help for an hour a week, let alone every day? Is anybody going to teach them? Will anybody even realize that they can be fine on their own?
There are so many people who should be fine on their own, if people didn't underestimate them so much.
