Well I would be careful, I do not know Hale Bopp and Sean well. I have to confess that I only know a handful of people here who I have been in contact by PM.

I do not think Hale Bopp or Sean are likely to be trying to scam another member, but how do we know if the woman is telling the truth. I sincerely hope that she is being honest and that she does recover.

The "big C" AKA cancer scares me, while I dislike the idea of getting any form of cancer any cancer which is inside an important organ of mine (Heart, Brain, Liver or anything else I can not live without) has a super high fright factor. So I feel very sad for the young lady.

But keep in mind that while most people are basicly honest decent folk there are some nasty shark like monsters out there. Some of them might even pretend to have AS, so always swim with care.

My advice is to be more careful of a new member, while it might be possible for someone to fake AS on the internet the effort of doing it would not be worth it for most people. Also if you know someone in the real world (not the internet) who has had dealings with the person off line then you can find out some more about the person.

Also some things are close to impossible to fake on line, for instance if a member here claims to have published in the peer reviewed scientific press or have a PhD it is possible if you know the person's real name to check to see if a person with that name has got whatever slip of paper. If the person makes a claim which would create a paper trail which is of public record then consider checking it. For example death certificates are public documents in the UK.

I don't believe there is any scamming going on here by any WP members. All are well established. If I'm not mistaken they found a tumor and do not yet know whether it is malignant. I think it's a wonderful idea to raise money for a plane ticket but the complete details of the young woman's situation are still an unknown.

Scam Alert ! Scam Alert !

I spoke to my NT wife, she also thought that care is needed. She is more sure than me that it is likely to be a scam.

Is the woman asking you to transfer money by "western union" or another money transfer company whose type of transfer tends not to leave a paper trail ? If it is western union then it is likely to be a scam.

The woman who says she has a brain tumor could have been reading a medical text book, it is common knowlege that brain injury or tumor is oftein linked to headaches.

I hope that I am wrong but I have a nasty feeling about this case.

If you want to prove that the woman has a brain tumor then I would go for a little social enginnering. In case the scammer is reading I will not post the eight steps. If any of the two men involved wants to see Woodpecker's cookbook page for how to boil a scammer then PM me.

While woodpecker's eight steps are not fool proof they would require a scam artist to do a lot of work to pass, so even if the person passes the eight steps it is not a perfect indication that they are honest.

I think it's a bit sad that some of you would rather raise suspicions than raise a few quid for a plane ticket. If it's a scam, it's hardly ambitious.

If you read the thread where this information originated, you'll see that (a) the girlfriend doesn't know anything about this donation stuff, and (b) it was members of this forum who first broached the subject, purely as a way for sean to buy a plane ticket.

I agree. And I will donate. If you think it's a scam then just don't donate. There's no need to be mean about it. When someone asks for help it's really bad form to yell "FAKER!!" in his face. Shame on those who are being so heartless or at least negligent of common decency. Most of us wouldn't act like that IRL, so why is it ok to do it here?

Sean didn't want to ask for money - Hale Bopp is just trying to help him and he was encouraged by her and a few others of us in this direction - including me. Also, he's not trying to get the money for chemo - just a plane ticket (about $200). Anything left over, he'll give to his girlfriend's family to help with costs.

Also, there are people who have offered prayers on his behalf and he is very grateful - you don't have to give money. There are a great many religious or spiritual people on this site who can help in that way, even if they are uncertain as to the veracity of his story.

I'd rather be kind and mistaken than miserly and lacking in compassion.

I understand your warnings for people to be careful, however, in this case Hale Bopp's been a member since November 2004 and seanmw since July 2009. Neither is a new.

I think it was nice of Hale_bopp to try to bring this to more peoples attention. If I had some extra money to donate I would do so, but I do not unfortunately. Nevertheless, I hope Seanmw gets to go meet his girl and be supportive in person.

May you grow up and come to realize that what you are doing is not bringing you or anyone else any satisfaction or benefit of any kind. You have my sympathy.
