How NTs want us to feel about our special intrests?

I think nts want us to hate our special interests. Possibly because they do. Special interests do not make you happy, they cause mental retardation, and perhaps even insanity. NTs possibly hate special interests with a passion themselves.

They want us to feel like freaks, because they think that it will motivate us, to be like them.

That clip had nothing to do with us.
It was making fun of people who study animals by living with them.

As for NT's and their opinion over our interests, I think their only problem with our interests is when we talk about them for too long and can't pick up when we're getting boriing to them.

If they were going to make fun of us, they'd have had the bald guy be more defensive of the interest.

On a side note, I wish that book actually existed.
Ever since I was told anteater is my 'animal spirit' I've had a fascination with them - not because of any mythical belief, but because I always follow up when obscure topics are brought to my attention. Especially obscure animals.

Yes. She is. I won't debate the awesomeness of Jane Goodall.
But we should be mad at 'the onion' parody because it makes fun of her, not of us.

I reconise the attitude so well. That's basicaly how everyone wanted me to feel for my special intrest in meerkats but it never worked. My most painful memory is my parents not accepting my passion for them and constantaly telling me that I needed to "widen my horizons". My mom would tell me I could talk about anything but meerkats for a certian amout of time and that it is what taught me to talk about other things. It also taught me to feel my feelings didn't matter and that I wasn't loved as much as my parents claimed and my parents didn't give a damb about me. If my parents took away my meerkat pictures and plushies and wouldn't let me talk about them period, I possibly would have commited sucide. My parents had doctors and phycologists suggest that route but they would cancel all future appointments with them and look for another when it was suggested. I think my parents knew I would have killed myself. My parents eventualy learned to accept my meerkat obsession but it's still a painful memory.

I sometimes wonder if there was an aspie kid who's special intrest was diseases and cells and that was all he taked about. Their parents, doctors and teachers didn't like that because it was normal or because it bored them so they "widened his horizons" and taught him to talk about sports or something that is a "normal" intrest but if they had encouraged the special intrest in diseases, he would have discovered the cure to cancer.

I got a similar impression when I tried to tell my mother i thought i had Asperger's.
She didn't want to hear it. I certainly felt the love that day (sarcasm!)

In fact, it wound up in a confrontation and a meltdown.
It got so bad that somehow my stepfather got it into his head to threaten to call the police if I didnt calm down. I still have no idea how he figured I was a threat, backed into the corner against the kitchen sink, bawling my brains out, nose dripping and begging for them to listen to me for once in their lives...

Needless to say, both of them were pretty sloshed (scotch and rye(?) respectively). Sort of a norm with my parents.

I didn't sleep more than 5 minutes that night. Isn't it hell when you find out your parents let you know they don't give a crap what you're thinking / have any faith in your mind?
