Life without understanding the AS is 'flying blind' and brutal. There's a difference between understanding and working with/overcoming the AS and using it as an excuse (to be rude on purpose, not to try, etc.).

The only way I knew I was going to know for myself (diagnosis or not) would be meeting someone with AS.

Meeting someone with AS will surely sort things out for me. There's always this slight feeling of doubt in the back of my head. The thing is that I live in a place where AS is really not that common, so my chances of meeting someone before the age of 18 are rather slim.
(there is this guy I know though, who I believe meets the criteria for AS. We get along rather well.)

Regarding meeting somebody with AS, I imagine it can help - somebody to compare yourself to.

I've met a few and been to a support group once, at which I literally saw the whole spectrum. It was the only time so far I've seen somebody who has a bona-fide diagnosis and my impression was unless she told you you'd never know! I saw everything from that to full-blown autistic.

Sorry, that last post was more of a "silver lining" on a dark cloud thing, not advice for others to take. :)
