Sorry, I am a sickeningly optimistic person.

So if you and a pessimist were out on the lake in a small boat and the outboard motor was not starting, would you be the one still pulling its rope or the one beginning to pull the oars?!

How big is the lake? How small is the boat? (And, unless it's a rowboat, I'd probably use a paddle, not oars.) How far is shore? Chances are good I'd just swim to shore. But, worst case scenario, I'd probably just be a little bit wet. Nothing a change of clothes and a hot shower wouldn't fix.

Negative thinking just makes me more depressed. I can kind of see how negative thinking could help people but it's not very healthy for me.
Positive all the way.

I'm instinctively positive but it's not a good thing. It results in me not dealing with problems until the last minute

I'M so pessimistic that I had to list it as one of my CHARACTER DEFECTS on my Sixth Step - my sponsor made SURE of it!

"AS A MAN THINKS, SO SHALL IT BE," he says.

I don't necessarily blame this on being somewhere on the spectrum; I think life experiences play a big part! But if my life experience actually IS shaped by me being OTS, then...

So then, I would say looking far beyond the immediate would most definitely qualify you as an optimist!

Well-said, and true.

Me too, actually. Whether or not my eyes are fixed upon the mountain, I still trip and stumble over pebbles and rocks. But without a big picture to at least try to ponder, I fear the immediate might drive me insane.

I'm a realist. I observe and keep track of good vs bad things that happen around me. This has made me a pessimist because for the most part things do not work out. A life is a series of compromises.
