I wasn't dx'd until later in life, but I've been a something of an anthropologist as long as I can remember and developed many coping skills which, if I could figure out how to articulate them, would likely be quite helpful to others on the spectrum and their families. Autism isn't something that can be trained 'out', but skills can be trained 'in', and this is good. I'd like to be a 'bridge', too, if I could get over my inertia to go out and make the effort. Obviously, I still have issues that need to be dealt with. :/

I admire your sense of direction.

Thank you so much. I have problems with inertia too, but I have a strong need to make other's experience easier than mine was which drives me. But I think you are right, my inner world is still autistic, but I put on a pretty good act if I have to.

CockneyRebel: I dont know what is better or worse for that matter...short term humilation, v's long term social skils or just letting be what be

I feel like I am in some kind of purgatory between AS and NT. It is a very lonely place.

and I think the people who did the "extensive social skills training" when you were younger now owe you the courtesy of helping to sort that out. However, I also suspect their inability to do so.

That would be nice, but most of them I have lost touch with, but if I find one of them...I might ask them that.

What does "social skills training" entail anyway?

Is it available for adults with AS?

basicly it is training you the do's and dont's of socail interaction and coupled with explaining the why's of it all. You will never think like an NT, but with training you can somewhat fake it
and blend in with more ease.
Anyway,
a job coach, therapist who specializes in ASD, Some places like Emory university has a social interaction center for young adults with autism spectrum disorders...Emory has a big Autism clinic. You could also find a nice NT who could explain it all for you. Basicly it is who, why where, what and how of social interaction. As Dyrad said, you kinda have to adopt a mentality of an anthropologist when learning social skills. Nt people know social stuff subconsciously, while for us to adopt these skills we have to be fully conscious of these rules like being in a forigen country.

a good person to go to is at most universities is a forigen student center which there is usually a person who works there that teaches forgien students social skills for this country.
The resources for adults with autism is much more limited than it is for children.

Even though I didn't have the social skills naturally, I can make a forgery that looks so much like the original even the experts can't tell the difference. Practice makes perfect :)

That is a neat way of putting it...I think that could be a good way to explain it

The bottom line is the following: Do YOU think you know to much because you are too NT to be AS and too AS to be NT?

somwhere in the middle...sometimes I get frustrated cause I dont fit neatly in any catigory.

Hey I'm kind of like you, my AS is mild- I trained my self to appear as 'normal' as possible over the years. I didnt even know what was up with me until a year or so ago, i just thought I was weird as hell and maybe schziophrenic or something. for thinking so strangely. I stop my self from stimming or saying weird things most of the time and learned appropriate responses and topics for certain situations...but I definitely noticed early on that everything felt like acting and that I never really felt genuine when conversing with people.

Its lonely because nobody viewed me as being autistic, just quiet and maybe weird yet nobody viewed me as a regular person either. I totally feel you on that, you just have to find worthwhile friends who accept you for who you are. once you fine those people the loneliness dissipates somewhat, I only recently found out who my real friends are. I stopped "acting" because I became comfortable with myself after I finally found the cause for being the way I am...and most of my "friends" left but I now know that I have 4 real friends who stick by me no matter how weird I am- and they are very mainstream people too which is

You have a point...I just have so many overlapping conditions that I sometimes felt like no one could understand me. I guess that is why I say I feel lonely being high functioning but not NT either...is this feeling of being an island. I understand others quite well, expecially other aspies but... sometimes I feel like I am behind a two way mirror. I can see others, but others cant see me.
