It makes me feel quiet and I think I have the tendancy to sometimes not meet it properly enough or speak directly and clearly. You just don't expect it sometimes even if the person is standing right there. I tend to just say "oh I'm fine thanks" and carry on.

Sometimes I see a sales guy walking over from the other side of the store and I deliberately put several aisles between me and him so he can't ever reach me! Then again I should probably just give them a break.

I just nod at the door greeters and keep moving.

I actually whine a lot about the ones within the store who approach me and ask if I need help. I suppose I'm wrong about this, but it seems to me that if I'm not looking around like I'm lost, it should be obvious I don't need help. I know it's their job, but it feels like harassment to me. I know the polite thing to do is say, "No, thank you," and I do try to do that.

Perhaps NTs aren't as good at reading body language as they claim? ;)

I don't like talking to store employees. For some reason it makes me feel more shy/awkward than if I were talking to fellow customers. Maybe because they're in a position of authority?

Who else here has problems with that?

Oh I HATE that. I hate it also when I walk into a fast food restaurant and not even one minute the cashier asks Can I Help you?

I can't stand the employers being all cherry and joyful wearing those stupid santa hats singing or saying Merry Christmas.
Oh I can't stand people who work in those kiosks in the shopping malls trying to get shoppers to buy such and such. Some are downright annoying and rude.

I don't have issues with it myself. It's worth bearing in mind that they're trained by their managers to do greet customers on entry, and that if they don't go along with the programme they risk getting fired (especially in the current economic climate). They probably don't always feel entirely comfortable doing it either.

It's their job. I understand that. I simply say "No, thank you."

They are just doing their job--which is to discourage shoplifting by greeting people who come into the store. This reduces the cost of doing business, which allows them to lower their prices.

I dislike being approached by shop assistants, especially when I have just come though the door. I realise that most of them are told to do this but I feel it is because bosses think it is what shoppers always want. I can become agitated and the overload sets in faster. If the appear to be following me or are too insistent am sometimes rather rude, not that a lot of them seem to notice though! I politely ask their name then say ‘I’ll shout for you Bill if I need you’ as I turn away.

If I am feeling OK though I get Bearsac to greet them - this mostly brings out the human in them and relaxes me. Some are rude about my thing with Bearsac (my teddy bear talking to them) but those type are in the minority.

I just ignore it. I know they are doing it because it's their job and they are only doing it to make money. They have to do it or else get fired. So I be nice to them because I think the last thing they need is meanness when it's not even their fault unless you want to say they chose to get that job so it is their fault.

If they approach me in the store asking me if they can help me find anything, I just say no. If I wanted help, I would just go find someone and ask. And most of the time I am just looking, not looking for anything in particular. It is rare when I am actually looking for something and then one of them approaches me and asks if they can help me find anything. But if I know where the item is at or where to look, I say no because I don't need their help.

I always feel awkward going past greeters, usually i just ignore them or nod, if i'm alone though i practice my response before i get to them, unfortunately this sometimes backfires because either they don't say anything to me or they something that makes what I respond with sound weird.

Anyone totally avoid small stores where you might be the only one there or where your not sure if you will buy something? Like small shops where the guy behind the counter is probably the owner?

Yes, I avoid that kind of store because it feels so awkward. I might get in there and find there is absolutely nothing I want. Then I'll have to leave, calling over my shoulder, "Thank you!" and wondering if that makes me sound like a shoplifter who's just made a score. I'm much relieved if there is at least one little thing I can buy.

This.

Or I'll add also "Hi" or "No thanks" (latter if they ask if I need any help), both as "automatic responses".

But poor schmoes, yeah; I'd hate doing so, but at this point I'd take the same job and be the greeter as long as it got me some employment and money, which I really need, and I'm sure they need.

Working at a part time job that involves selling stuff I can tell you that a lot of those people can also be on the spectrum like us. They run the full gament.

You shouldn't take offense to them, they are just trying to be courteous.

well speaking as one of those introverted outside of work and more extroverted at work (than anywhere else), i understand why people b***h about this. luckily at a lot of the big retail chains associates wear radios and at my store, we communicate on a regular basis who has and hasnt been assisted. yes sometimes we may over greet and harass customers but usually its because no one has said that they have helped that person til after maybe the 3rd or more person has made contact with them. if you come in with an attitude when we are doing our jobs, expect us to A:Avoid you like the plague as you obviously make it pretty clear you dont want help and B: to talk about you over the radios and when you leave, huffing and puffing like you are the most important person to enter the store today. some people seem to forget that we are people too and we like to be treated with respect and maturity. if you cant handle it (i mean truly cant handle it), then maybe you should wear a sign saying (dont help me) or flip us off or run away as soon as you enter the store. this never ending debate on the good and bad of customer service is rather redundant and doesnt solve anything anyways (including those friends of ours called the NTS). you are a customer and we are here to provide you a service with our happy, friendly, knowledgeable, excited, interested, fun and helpful associates and managers. and we will be wearing those elf hats because our company is or will be known for that at least for this christmas season. oh and enjoy the christmas music too. i'll be listening to it 40 hours a week for the next month. :D

That's how fast food cashiers take orders, where you're supposed to tell them what you want. i'm more bugged by the people in retail stores that you wouldn't communicate with normally unless you needed help.
