Delayed cognitive processing?
This morning right after I woke up it occurred to me that I'd misunderstood someone's reply-post and gave what I now realize was a confused answer. The trouble is that was 3 days ago.
And when driving home I'll often realize what someone had earlier been trying to tell me, or have an insight into what was going on with someone or between people, and all sorts of other realizations. Sometimes these realizations happen days, weeks, or even years later.
So, my question is does anyone else experience this "delayed cognitive processing"? I figure some amount of it is normal, but I have that happen a lot. At times I feel like I understand very little in real-time, and feel pretty bone-headed about it. The annoying part is not realizing that I didn't understand, at the time.
Since I have other cognitive problems I'm curious if others generally also experience this.
In autism, there is a 'modeled' inter- hemispheric problem between the 2 halves of the brain. I wonder if this it here; at the corpus callosum ?
I've experience it in two ways, and my knee jerk reaction to it was that it is absolutely abnormal :
1) one is exactly as outlined, but it is contingent upon external factors.
2) early living experiences up to my middle/late thirties, an immaturity you could say, filling in the gaps at a later time.
There would be an 'intellectual grasp' arise at an unconventional time, or better, at an odd time not related to anything in as far as the trigger.
As in some of the posters as being clueless as to what was going on, my experience was based on over thinking of it and reaching wrong conclusions ; they being rectified unconsciously later^.
The later ceased, but the former waxes and wanes with outside influences.

I think Im slow processing because Im considering more information at a time than the "main" intentions of somebody else's actions. This makes their intentions sometimes less important than the way they express it, -> and I often feel that peoples actual intentions are none of my business (I dont really care). I realize that I sound egoistic, but I have to add that I consciously let everybody have their intentions, whatever they may be, except for evilness, so that I regarding this am accepting and respecting everybody around me. Im also not always affected by peoples intentions, even if somebody intend something towards me (except for evilness). It is not always important to me. It depends on the situation whats more important, and peoples mechanisms, methods and affection of the universe can be more important than their personal intentions.
I also sometimes realize later, that a person had an intention that I missed in a past moment (maybe because some other information was overly interesting in that specific moment or because I was having anxieties and therefore was not wanting to experience the situation), but I try my best not to look back, and believe that the things I notice around me are perfect like they are; and dont need to be reconsidered to be more "right" when I acknowledge somebody else's comprehension of a past situation. This acknowledge is by my opinion, really unimportant.
On the contrary, I am very aware of and affected by the intentions of my boyfriend, family and closest friends. This is surely because I know them well, but also I think it is because their desires matter to me, which again makes me sound like Im egoistic towards others. I think this is something that I then just have to admit, even though -> it really depends on the person and the situation, so I have no strict law on this.
If I would miss that somebody is flirting with me, I think it is because Im not wanting to understand it that way.
I would be more irritated if I would miss an evil intention, because acknowledging this gives power to my personal defence mechanism, which is disturbing my open mindness, so I actually prefer to stay unaware of these intentions.
The past is mainly good for remembering where I put my key and objective, unchangeble things like that.
What I want to say is, that the way I see the world I think is the correct way, and eveybody else see it their way too, wich then is correct to them.

Yes!! I tried explaining this in an autistic spectrum support group once and nobody understood. It makes it hard to hold a conversation, though I've learned techniques over the years. With me the delay usually ranges from a few hours to a day or so. I'm not trying to figure anything out; it just appears in my brain out of the blue.
I also have the slight sensory delay thing. Someone will say something on the street and it will take a few seconds for the sounds to have meaning. Or for the sudden situation to (like something falling).

Can I get back to you in a few days?
After I've had time to process your post?
Just kidding.
Yeah. It happens to me several times per day, every day. The problem for me now though is that I've just begun to realize that my ADD plays far more of a part in this problem than I ever realized before. So I'm not sure how much of it in me is ADD or AS. I think it's both, but how am I supposed to know? I see everything through the fog of both AS and ADD twenty-four seven, so I'm not a good judge of which causes what.

When I was younger I had to repeat what people said to me in my mind a couple of times before it would sound like a language I understood. I've heard that attributed to central auditory processing disorder, and/or called "meaning deafness."

I came up with some tricks to 'hear faster,' though the trade off is accuracy (and tending to say things that I don't think/feel/etc.)
Ok, having that happen frequently doesn't seem to be a rare phenomenon.
Thanks for the responses, all.
As to why the other kinds of delays happen, there's some interesting ideas here, but I still have no clue. I was just remembering that when I saw "Star Wars" when I was 11 I didn't really understand that movies had a story & a plot that you were supposed to pay attention to, until I was older. I'd get drawn up into the atmosphere of scenes; two characters could be talking in the foreground, but I'd be watching the out-of-focus mechanic in the background working on a space ship, and the fog from the people's breath, and the lighting and such.
I've always felt like that was a big part of the way my mind worked -- being able to detect and absorb the 'essence' of things; to sense something's character, or it's 'aesthetic.' The things that made me a good mimic.
Well, not sure I'm making a lot of sense at this point, so I think I'll go to bed now.
Interesting! This is what I now find myself doing, but never did as a kid. Probably comes from watching thousands upon thousands of movies over the years. I USED to be wrapped up in the story and plot. Now I'm focused on everything BUT the plot.

Just for the sake of clarity, and to add :
My "cognitive performance" can be strong or weak, as noted. I've experienced this^ but not always. The "phenomenon" in this thread I've experienced, as posted, but would climb out of it to a state mental sharpness . One time I attributed this to a chemical depression or imbalance, as there is a sluggishness of thought when serotonin & norepinephrine are down. Tried" these" but to no avail (drugs).
If the stressors are low, I sail , but given enough of a load, I dip into the 'brain jungle'- this is the only correlation I have.
It's a shot in the dark here, as what this is,^ and a subsequent "frustrating as can be, feeling." In the past I've gotten burned out as slipping into a type of combat fatigue....
Yes. I usually think of thing I need from the store after someone's asked me, I've said no and then they leave. Or worse at a doctor's appointment or like appointments where I'm asked if I have any questions and I try to think and say no only to think of some once I'm on the way home or at home.

I get this often, too. When I was younger, I used to think up these awesomely witty comebacks... the next day. Or I'd get the joke that everyone was laughing about... weeks later than I should have.
I've had more than one case of where someone will ask me a question and I'll continue on my business. Only to realize a few moments later that I was supposed to answer or do something.
In a joking manner, I'll say it's similar to a Load Screen.
Processing request.... processing .... processing..... complete!
