I've been in the position of being flamed, although since I generally had no idea why this was happening, I just tried to argue back rather than explain. I still find it confusing what people define as "flaming" that they think I'm flaming them when I simply disagree.

I have cut that down a lot over the past few years due to conscious effort and shifting the topics I talked about as well as how I talked about them. I've also learned some basic stuff like how a lot of people seem unable to discern the difference between criticizing their arguments and criticizing them.

I am sure if I knew I was autistic when these arguments happened, and I tried to explain why I misunderstood or why I come across so bluntly, that I would have had that reaction. It's hard for me to distance myself from the stereotype since I suspect it would have been very easy for people to react to me that way at times.

Why are they not mentioning her making fun of alcoholics and people with celiac disease. Alcoholism is such an insidious disease that compromises your entire life. Basically you cease to be an individual and instead you become and extension of alcohol. It compromises your relationships and your priorities in life. I knew people (some whom I was very close to) who were alcoholics. It is sick that society looks down upon these people. Celiac disease is starvation. They can't help it - their body simply does not absorb the nutrients from their food properly. And you know what is even worse - it's pretty difficult to diagnose, so you could be starving to death - LITERALLY - and nobody can do anything about it.

I usually side with Jhonen Vasquez on the matter of humour: anything can be funny. However, certain people are comedians (people who CAN pull off dead baby humour/ black comedy) and others are f*****g psychos. The reason why the joke is stupid is because it is as if this woman is completely ignorant. It's like when people say "Evolution can't be true cuz if it were, my granny would be a monkey, hur dur hur". Yeah, imagine if she was a doctor:

Denise Scott: Well, I have concluded that you suffer from being f****d up (with a few behavioral issues).
Patient: What's the prognosis?
Denise Scott: I dunno.....but you're pretty much f****d.....I'd suggest suicide.
Patient: .......
Denise Scott: Next f*****g patient!

She's basically like this

Image

And I understand that her fellow comedians are going "Well, she's trying to look ableist because {insert nonexistent crisis in society concerning over diagnosis and big pharma]". I don't care if she makes fun of aspergers or alcoholism or celiac disease. I would just love for people to actually know what the f**k they're talking about. Aspergers can be hilarious if you actually understand it or don't just throw it about to make yourself look like you're oh so smart.

With that being said, I don't have anything personal against her. I just think she should have tried harder.

The people that are the most insulted are the parents of children with AS. I'm getting a bit sick of autism advocacy groups because they seem to complain so much.

Denise Scott is a funny woman and I'm not the slightest bit offended by this joke. My first impression was she was talking about people that complain they have it without actually having it.

Russel Cane...now that's another story. But comedians like shock factor with their jokes so it's something we must get used to. On Good News Week they slag off ADHD all the time.

that's the problem though... there are people who complain that they have it without having it, but a lot of NTs feel that they are qualified to determine which is which, so a lot of legitimately autistic people end up getting flamed for "pretending" to have autism. comments like this could make NTs feel that flaming people that they think are making excuses is an okay thing to do, which it really isn't because you have no way of knowing if the person really is faking or not...

But that's what comedians do, most of them offend or push boundaries of good taste. (I found that excerpt so nonsensical I'm not even sure she meant the part about Asperger's, could have just been absurdist humor.) As long as nobody is being coerced to listen to a comedian and no unsuspecting people have to hear it where is the problem with that in a free society? Do we want them to churn out meaningless apologies whenever they're insensitive like Gilbert Gottfried re: japan?

Oh?

Personally, I don't care what this comedian said. People can think whatever they want, it doesn't change facts.

Perhaps the real reason she made this joke is you can't make the equivalent joke about Aboriginies. Andrew Bolt is on trial under the Racial Discrimination Act.

The equivalent comedy would be, “I can’t stand people who say they are Aboriginies, when the fact is they’re just plain old-fashion f***ed up people with a few behavioural problems.”

Andrew Bolt Hate Speech Trial

"They allege the articles implied they were ''professional Aborigines'' who had chosen to identify themselves as Aborigines based on the thinnest strand of their genetic make-up to gain financial and other benefits."

the average NT can't, and they often accuse real aspies of "faking it for attention". i get it all the time, when i'm in the middle of a meltdown, flapping my hands and biting myself, they say "grow up! you're just doing this for attention!"

or when i'm messed up because i haven't had my medication...

or... when i'm explaining why i'm so interested in my special interests... (because that makes sense, not)

Why is this getting so much and someone on the roast of donald trump told him "youve built more useless hotels than an autistic kid playing monopoly" and they didnt get crap.

I was deeply offended. My hotels were strategically built in areas to hit multiple times a round.

I feel sorry for Denise Scott over this. I don't really like her but i get the JOKE!

There is another comedian in Australia, Fiona O'Lauchlin. Who she was making fun of. Fiona is a "recovering" alcoholic with frequent relapses, has a bazillian children and has made jokes about how one of her children has cealiacs but eats oats..... WTF and she has been told that another one of her children could have aspergers.

I think only people who know the comedy circuit in Australia really well would have gotten the joke. She used a tad too much previous knowledge on that one. LOL.

I'm done talking to those people. After two pages of comments, they still have no idea what the conversation is about. Pointless.
