Sometimes, it's hard to know when someone is being sarcastic because the vocal edginess is lacking. They just say it in a deadpan tone and expect others to automatically know what they mean. When they do this, I take them seriously. When they acknowledge they were being sarcastic, I go on pretending they weren't if it's a compliment about something I like. If they want me to key in on their sarcasm, they better be good at it or it's no deal.

Sadly, knowing WHEN to be sarcastic is not so easy. And sarcasm at the wrong time is not good way to get along with people.

Recognizing sarcasm is a problem too. Some people aren't very good at it and are obvious in their tone of voice and inflection. But someone that is good at it is much more subtle in their delivery. These sarcastic adepts trip me up all the time.

^ Precisely. I've suffered through some awkward and embarrassing moments because I used sarcasm at what was apparently the wrong time. Also because I thought someone else was being sarcastic--and in fact they weren't. For the most part, I've decided to leave sarcasm alone. The Smartass Rules of Etiquette are too difficult to follow.

Sarcasm is easy once you understand the "rule". Basically, think of what you mean, find words that express the opposite, and speak them with a bit of edginess in your voice.

Sarcasm is “a sharp, bitter, or cutting expression or remark; a bitter jibe or taunt.” Though irony is usually the immediate context, most authorities sharply distinguish sarcasm from irony; however, others argue that sarcasm may or often does involve irony or employs ambivalence.

i think i've sort of become known as the person who doesn't get the joke half the time in most social situations. i'm comfortable with that. we end the moment by laughing at/with me.

I think I usually recognize and understand sarcasm. But I don't like sarcasm and don't use it.

I suck at sarcasm. I only pick up on it when it's really really obvious.

I'm incredibly sarcastic. However, other people's sarcasm generally goes right over my head.

I prefer deadpan delivery, but I try not to be mean - that is, no intended insulting implications in the explicit or intended/reversed meaning.

I stopped doing this so much when it was pointed out to me that I sounded pretty mean. I was mostly just amused by the ability to say exactly the opposite of what I meant and have people understand it that way. It was like a magic trick.

I understand sarcasm perfectly but I have difficulty recognizing it and a rather strong dislike of it. Even if I recognized it 100% of the time, I still wouldn't like it. It's such a lazy attempt at humor and always ends up sounding insulting. When my sister asked me why I hated the TV show Scrubs, I told her it's because the show is nothing but quirky hipster sarcasm from start to finish. I'd rather drink battery acid than suffer through another episode of that show.

I say no to every question some expects a Yes too..

That's the extent of my Sarcasm.

I can pick up on and understand most Sarcasm, but I do fail every now and then, most recently was when I was eating Ice Cream, in a Cone.

Somebody asked me "How's the Cone?" And I replied with, and in all seriousness, "Well, I'm not sure, I haven't finished the top layer of Ice Cream yet"

He just called me a dumbass and walked away.

Oh well.
