used to do that when i was a kid. don't any longer. my only problem now is i tend to try to dumb down what i'm saying when i talk to people, either that or i can't say it because of noise and the impairment to concentration it causes.

This is one thing I seem to be good at, especially when talking with someone who shows a lot of enthusiasm themselves. When I can't think of anything to say to someone (which is very often) I will just let them keep talking and pretend I'm interested even if I'm bored out of my mind or have no clue what they are talking about.

You could just as well be describing me here.

I also hesitate to knock on doors, ring doorbells or call anyone on the phone for fear I may be inconveniencing them, even if I'm expected. I'm always overly concerned about being bothersome or intrusive.

(I notice I've veered off topic a bit. Sorry!)

You sound like you're doing a hell of a better job of faking enthusiasm than I could! I don't get enthusiastic even when its genuine!

I actually find it - like most excessive emotional outbursts - really really annoying.

You know you're right! When I actually see really overly excited people I believe they're faking it because its hard for me to believe that anyone can get that happy.

I also hate making noise. I don't laugh out loud or scream or yell or exclaim loudly when in pain or under any other circumstances.

I do, I have to admit, flap my hands when I get really excited.

Are you like my long lost twin or something? I honestly do the exact same thing...I've never screamed as a kid, or made much of any kind of noise because I just found it loud, annoying to myself and unnecessary. I flap my hands too though...when I'm happy, upset, excited etc...I try hard not to in public because I hate having people looking over at me thinking I'm a nutter. I also walk on my tip-toes, always have and always will...when I have my shoes on I can't though and so I kind of tread along weird because my feet don't feel right lying flat.

This. Haha.

I don't know that we're long-lost twins but I do toe-walk all the time and have mild issues with walking in shoes (although I don't think quite like you do - but it does feel odd).

I can almost never show enthusiasm. This does not mean I don't feel it, I just can not easily show it. It causes a lot of issues I noticed.

I can over most things. Sometimes a friend will talk about the most boring thing in the world and be really excited about it....but I have learned to fake enthusiasm to just show respect for their life and interests. It relies heavily on non-verbal language and tone of voice.

My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I’m no longer involved with the ASD world.

Yes! Especially in front of children. But I rarely have to fake it because I try to be positive as I can be!

When I fake entusiasm, I feel fake.
