I think the corporations beam special gas into their minds.

I like finding bargains, but I don't shop that often. I don't believe in wasting money on excess clothes, when I could save it to buy a macbook. When I go shopping, I enjoy myself. However, I like to go alone, or with people who don't bug me to try every last thing on. Granted, I don't have AS- just processing and sensory issues.

I never understood shopping really, and I always wondered why my mum and sister would take forever in a store and still come out with nothing. :P But since I have to go around and look for products I use in my work, finding the best product and looking for the best deals is something I have to do. I don't buy things I don't need, and perhaps that's the main reason this thread was started, but I do enjoy going out and looking for the things I need. I don't really see it as socializing, perhaps as most others do, but the quicker I get what I need, the quicker my work gets done.

Gatherer: sometimes when you go into the forest and wander for hours, you find edible plants. Sometimes you don't.

Hunter:[b] Your tribe needs a deer. You stalk the deer. You kill it. You bring it home.

I think the different way men and women shop is a relic of our hunter-gatherer past. You illustrated out that difference with perfect anecdotes.

I think the hunter/gatherer idea is logically dodgy. Shopping is considered a common pastime for women now, in western nations, but things in the past were often different. Everything doesn't need an evolutionary precedent to explain it properly.

It is more likely that, culturally, a lot of the value of femininity is placed in having attractive clothing. This is much like how a lot of the value of masculinity is placed in sports or automobiles. People respond to both of these things.

Or perhaps how best to make a fashionable hat from the deer skin distracted the gatherers so much so that they forgot what they were looking for? Interesting analogy, although I'm not an evolutionist myself.

women buy clothes as a status thing. Pretty attractive women generally end up with attractive or at least men with good jobs etc if they go by an evolutionary standard of mate selection.

I used to not care but now I sortof understand a little bit better what purpose shopping serves. Children in clean clothes that fit well and nicely brushed hair are treated better and the parent has better social status. The idea appears to be that women and children reflect their mate's social status in how they dress and are also competing to keep their mate's attention.

Personally I like kohls as they have a 30% off coupon and aside from shoes and purses I buy everything online. I'm super particular about my purse as I don't change purses until the purse is awful looking and I like very comfy shoes as I messed up my feet from toe walking. I have to actually try the shoes on and it takes forever to find good shoes.

That's how I shop. I don't like to spend a lot of time in a store. I can usually see right away if they carry the kinds of things that I like, and I usually have something specific in mind when I enter a store. Just hanging out and vaguely looking for things drives me crazy.

Me too. Shopping for books and movies is a different story.

Definitely! I can easily spend a few hours looking at books or movies to buy.

I hate shopping for clothes with friends because they look around for hours and come out with nothing plus they try on so many clothes they know they can't afford just for that momentary happiness to see themselves in those clothes they want but cant have and I never understand them. My shopping is very organized I go with a to-do-list and only go shopping if its absolutely necessary.

I very much enjoy visiting the websites of my favorite stores and browsing through all of the new clothing, shoes, and jewelry items. It is nice to see what types of things are available. And every once in a while I buy something to treat myself. So I can see why NT women enjoy shopping, and even why they might enjoy looking around a store and not buying anything (because I browse the websites a couple of times per week, but I only make a purchase once every few months). What I don't enjoy so much is going out to the stores, trying the clothing on, etc...this is why I do everything online.

The problem with online shopping is you don't know if the clothes fit you perfectly. If you shop at a store you can try them on before buying them... Also you never know when you'll receive your purchase if you shop online...

I do a lot of my shopping at Amazon.com. I joined something called Amazon Prime, meaning that if I buy certain selections, they qualify for free 2 day shipping with no minimum purchase. But I rarely buy items of clothing from them that might be a problem if they don't fit. For instance, I purchase undergarments because I pretty much know my size. But things like dresses or slacks I need to try on first, so I don't buy online. I recently purchased a really nice pair of sneakers from them, and they fit perfectly.

The two websites I shop from most frequently are Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. I have been shopping from those stores both online and in person for several years now, so I know what size I need from those particular stores. Plus, if I just want to buy a piece of jewelry, I don't need to try it on first. My orders are always delivered when I buy directly from the store's website, but I have had trouble with Amazon in the past, so I try not to use Amazon unless I have to.

I don't see what all the fuss is about shopping either. I think a lot depends on how image-focused and social a person is.

I do practically all my clothes shopping online now and only when they have a sale - M&S and Debenhams usually and Clarkes for shoes.

I don't see shopping IRL as a fun activity, I see it as a mission that has to be endured and try to avoid it if at all possible. Consumer culture and capitalism has made it into a very unpleasant experience in my opinion. Everyone seems to be competing with everyone else and I get sick of it. Shopping seems to have become some kind of a religion for many people these days - I find it very sad.

I hate shopping for clothes.

I stopped growing height-wise two years ago (4'11) and my weight only fluctuates about 5 pounds up or down, due to hypo-thyroid issues. So, I only have to buy clothes about twice a year and I love that. I shop at a second-hand store called Value Village and spend about $30. I'm really uncomfortable in stores because the employees always ask if they can help and I'm like "No, I'm trying to do this as quick as possible" and they act like I kicked them in the stomach.

I'd much rather shop in the music store or bookstore than a clothing store. It's not really hard for me to find clothes though, I just grab whatever jeans and t-shirt fit me.

That's a shame. What kind of trouble did you have with Amazon? I'm curious.
