In the US a black man scratching his nuts would go unnoticed its just to common.

I don't remember sucking my thumb, but when I was a kid, I chewed the crap out of everything that wasn't nailed down. My dog does this too, but he eats it, too. I don't think I ever ate much that I would regret, other than the actual 'How Much'. My poor dog has so much to regret, he leaves evidence everywhere. Isn't that the same thing, just more advanced, since we have teeth.

I didn't suck on my thumb but I always sucked on the roof of my mouth. Sometimes I wonder if this contributed to speech impediments and other tongue management problems. I still suck on the roof of my mouth sometimes and it is convenient because it is not very noticeable. I also chew on things a lot and put them in my mouth, pens are most convenient of course but I find myself sticking a lot of objects in my mouth and chewing on them. It doesn't really seem to bother most people unless I get really invested in it; it doesnt have the same association as a thumb I guess. I used to take all my baby brother's teething toys and chew on them until they were ruined (when I was 7 or 8).

I also had a cat which sucked on things... he was weaned very early becuase his mother did not have enough milk, and he would suck on my sweatshirt or a blanket (or my fingers, but I tried to avoid that because he would bite by accident). Most kittens and puppies I have known besides this one seemed to grow out of sucking on things, although they liked to suck on fingers when they are young.

I sucked my thumb until I was about six, then I stopped but just started biting my nails instead. I bite my nails and the skin on my knuckles and the backs of my fingers and suck and chew pens and anything else that's to hand.

Hovis I did that too. Switched from thumb sucking to nail biting. I surprised my mom about 3 yrs ago when I overcame the nail biting habit and she saw that I had a full set of neatly filed nails. Though I do have unruly cuticles. :P I started biting only the nails on my little fingers and that really upset her when I saw her again as it "ashames" her that I bite my nails. Now I'm working to stop it by next time I see her which is once a year. I noticed a lot of adults bite their nails including my dr so I don't feel too bad about it but still want to overcome it. Its not just a matter of parent approval, but I suspect potential dates check out a person's nails among other things to decide if they are good dating material. Though nailbiting shouldn't be a deciding factor I think it may predict how in control a person is of themselves.

My nails are so short they almost hurt because of chewing and finger-picking them. Sometimes my fingertips even bleed. I also pull at the skin at the sides of the nails with teeth and fingers. My fingers aren't in a good condition.
Oh, my toenails are the worst. I hardly have any nails left.
The short nails are good for playing the guitar on the left hand, but bad on the right (need a pick).

My (NT) brother used to suck his thumb from when he was a baby and was still doing it at the age of 10. He obviously doesn't do it now (he is in his mid-20s), but he may still do it when he's alone, he may not, I can't prove anything.

Lots of adults do. I think moreso men than women. It's pretty common actually.
