A lot of advertisements are based on rejecting a person of the opposite sex. I don't completely understand why, but it's definately is delibrate.

Adds that do this (Australian TV):
- snickers adds about guys showing "nice curves" but girls only interested in chocolate
- beck's beer advert where guy ignores dancing woman's shape and pays attention to beer bottle
- other beer adverts where guys boorish behaviour annoys sophisticated women, then drinks beer (pulling a fish out of water while in venice + dive bombing into spar pool)

There are countless others, but I can't think of them right now.

I've quite enjoyed some adverts that were funny, but I agree - I can't remember actually being influenced to buy a product by one.

I don't like those 'cryptic' ads where until the ad ends and a tiny logo comes up on the screen or something, you don't actually know what it is that they're trying to sell. What's the point of that? :?

I think the point of most commerical is missed on Aspies because they are geared towards young NT's. Don't we usually get accused of missing the point? I believe the ads are made to illicit a "that company is cool" image in order for the brand name to stick in kid's minds.

I don't get the new hybrid vehicle commercial (can't even remember the name of it) where the tough guy in the truck ahead of them gets out and threatens to beat up the guy in the hybrid for honking at him. Are they saying hybrids are faster because the guy zooms off?

Frankly, those ads make me want to delay getting a cellphone, food ads make me want to eat locally and clothing ads me want to go dancing. go figure.

My point exactly. Ads don't make me want to buy the product being advertized and in fact make me less likely to. Clothing ads make me want to dance too! All the singing and dancing and color and hype just distract me away from the product being sold and remind me of something else.

I just don't understand why ad companys put so much money, time, and effort into ads if they aren't effective at doing anything.

In my last post I forgot to quote the borrowed sentence. The first statement isn't mine. Oopsy.

Yeah I have trouble understanding most commercials as well.. I just enjoy the funny ones and dont worry about the point or trying to figure out what exactly they are selling or trying to say.

They're not meant for us.. like reading a letter addressed to someone else.. its unlikely you'll understand half of what the person is talking about.

As for being dishonest.. thats one thing I wont forgive.. if someone lies to me thats it they dont get a second chance.

Id rather them be blunt and tell me what they are really thinking. I can take a "sod off" with a smile but having someone lie to me regardless of the reason is simply disrespectful and hateful to me.

If they arent brave or honorable enough to tell me the truth I wont have anything more to do with them.. they arent worth my time.

I think getting offended by something that's never going to change is stupid.

All the ads are telling you is that their product is so good, you would choose it over a man/woman (something that most people would want), They aren't supposed to offend anybody, or why else would they do it?

If you're offended because some girl you don't know rejected a guy you don't know on an ad that isn't even real, I feel sorry for you, I mean you must get offended at everything.

I think most ads are only effective if the person has an interest in the product in the first place. The ad just 'pushes' people to the point where they're ready to give away their money. If you're not already particularly interested in cars, clothes, etc, then you're not likely going to be influenced by an ad selling these products anyway.

For me I'm so insenstive to ads that I don't really give a darn about what they're selling. I know one ad that really annoys me because it plays about 50 times a day. You know that one that wants to sell you either insurance or something.

Oh man, that commercial really annoys me. My NT wife thinks it's funny. We've even had (friendly) arguments about the commercial because I think it's totally evil of the girl to deceive the guy like that while she thinks it's totally acceptable and even expected(!) for the girl to behave that way toward a guy she doesn't want to deal with. When I think about it, the commercial seems almost like a testament to what's wrong with "normal" people.

I think in many situations, despite that that can be true, people also wish to avoid confrontation and awkward social situations.

If that commercial were actually real life, I doubt she would've cared too much about sparing his feelings. I think she just didn't want to deal with directly turning him down.

Situations like lying about somebody's new haircut 'cause you don't want to hurt their feelings... I think that's more of what you're thinking. But for situations like that commercial, I doubt she'd really care.

Of course it depends on the person, too, and how empathic they are.

If I find out someone lied to me, it would be a bigger confrontation and awkward social situation then if they told the truth. When someone lies to me and I find out about it, i'm more upset that they lied to me then whatever the orginal issue was. It shows that the person does not respect you enough to be honest with you.

My little opinion on ads is that; Ads are to the mind what seual harassment or rape is to the body.
