Oh god yes. To be completely honest, I can at best tolerate him. At best.
He was never actually away when I grew up, but he wasn’t there for me either. We never bonded, I have never felt any closeness to him at all. When I was little he’d avoid playing with me, and would time it so that when he put away his newspaper and told me to get the toys, but no matter how quick I was, I’d always return from my room only to be told “no, the news are on now” or “the film starts”. Everytime. Trust me, little me noticed that very well. My beloved grandfather was more of a father to me than my father ever was. Maybe the rectum never forgave me for being born a girl, that’s all that matters to men, isn’t it?
We never bonded, I never liked him, and I never loved him.
I was also very aware of who it was who gave me gifts for birthday and Christmas growing up (and that was never him, only my mother and my grandparents; my mother tried covering it up when I was little, but she admitted it when I called the bluff).
As I got a little older, he has been somewhat emotionally abusive, very quick to put me down and point out everything he thinks is wrong with me. It ticks me off, but he lost the ability to hurt me very early. He can’t hurt me anymore, cause I his opinions matter less to me than what I leave behind in the toilet. He does make me angry though, as I do feel I should be allowed to be myself without him being an ass.
He has never been there for me, he has never had anything but criticism for me, and at times when I have been happy about something, I have been reluctant to talk about it at home when he’s there, because I get anxious waiting for sh***y comments that will come more often than not.
Just last year it occurred to me that he had turned 60 and that this stranger was my father, yet I hardly knew him (and whose fault is that, hey?). I wondered if I should try to talk to him, but I just couldn’t be bothered because I just don’t care.
The other day we had a row, and he said: “You shouldn’t bleeping have the right to life!” The next day he repeated it.
That is one comment I will never forgive. I think you should be guilty of something really bad to be told that to your face. At that moment I denounced him forever. I do no longer have a father.
