I've never had a problem spelling. I do however make plenty of mistakes writing, leave out words spell completely other ones.

I type words wrong, a select set of maybe 2 dozen words that I am aware of, incorrectly every time... I write them by hand correctly, and know full well how they are spelled...but every time I start typing, the same word spelling errors pop up. I suspect it has to do with my typing rhythm or something, that I’ve accidentally fallen into the habit of hitting one key a little too quickly and it going in just before the one that is getting depressed by another finger or what have you.

I've always been very good with spelling.

Most times I'm very good with spelling, but I read a lot of books since early childhood.

I know that if you have APD (another neurological disorder often comorbid with autism) that can result not just in taking longer to work out the meaning of what someone just said, but also can cause problems with phonetics in non dyslexic children, problems with diction and then problems with spelling.

Basically if as a child you had difficulty being able to sound out words on a page to read them, then the converse will be true and you will have difficulty sounding them out in your head to write them correctly.

Ye I go so fast that my dialect becomes terrible & I start entering the speed of sound. I like phonemic, that I just skip my orthography. Dysphonetic is really cool.

Is this an autistic problem or something else, a word like psychiatrist etc even though I might write it a million times a still can't spell it thank god for the internet. That's not the only word either anyone else with this problem I am not dyslectic even I had to look how to spell that its not a word that would be familiar with? I know dyslexia again I needed spell check is to do with seeing letters the same I do know the difference between B & D etc but constantly forget how to spell.

Spelling is something that makes me proud. I've always been excellent in spelling, both in my native language (Russian) and in English. Ironically, if anything makes me suspect Aspergers, my excellence in spelling might be one of those things.

I guess this is true for some, others may have great difficulty with it.

I think this is another example of how specific your skills can be. Spelling is one of the areas where I've always felt comfortable in. (As long as the rules stay the same. ) On the other hand, I had and still have great difficulty with other things.

Um... I was ranked third place in a national spelling contest (in spanish, in my country). In english I have spelling mistakes sometimes, and must google difficult words like whether, unbeknownst and thorough (this time I didn't have to look them up, but I still had to make an effort to get them right.

Reading a lot goes a very long way in writing words properly.

"Thorough" really is a tricky word. Some words come to me easily, regardless of how complex the spelling. Others will always remain a mystery to me.

It's actually true, though. ^^ I guess hyperlexia is more common in autism, but there are others who may find it difficult.

Sure, there are exceptions to every trait. The question is, are auties/aspies better spellers on average?

I was always a good speller but (judging from my first two posts in this thread) I've lost it. I am average or probably below average at most other things. Autistics seem to have "scattered" intelligence where for different aspects of intelligence they can be all across the board: average and below average and above average. NTs seem to have their different parts of intelligence at around the same level.

Sorry. I wasn't meant to annoy. My spelling is no better than anyone else's. It was a clumsy attempt to identify with you, not to pick on your spelling. I use "dammit" all the time, and don't care that it's not in most dictionaries.

I was kidding  - did you not see my third error (Your instead of You're) or are you being polite?

Thanks for pointing it out though. As much as I shouldn't care about the difference between "damnit" and "dammit" - I'll still have to change my spelling of it.

Spell-check on the computer has actually impaired my ability to spell; I have become so accustomed to having the computer fix all of my spelling errors that my fingers fell content to slam down any combination of letters, knowing that the computer will correct it with just a click of a mouse.
Despite this, I still appear to have a stronger spelling ability than that of my peers.

I don't think difficulty in spelling is an autistic trait. It might be a comorbid learning disability for some, but it is not directly autistic. I have autism, with no learning disability as far as I know, and despite the occasional typo you might find in my posts (or my laziness and lack of proofreading), I actually have excellent spelling and grammar.
