do you wear ear defenders?

for me, earbuds - you know, the kind that don't fall out of your ears; however, they may cause some damage. i am currently listening to nine inch nails (quietly) in a library! Aren't libraries quiet? YES. To a degree. Though, students tend to talk amongst each other, even if they're trying to as quiet as possible, but it just doesn't cut it for me - the whispers are over stimulating (the sounds eventually build up to sound like aural chaos), especially while trying to type this sentence. AND the printers sound like loud monsters.

I used to wear headphones with music to filter out the outside noises, but it made me too inattentive for traffic around and I had an accident, so now I am a bit scared to "shut down" my hearing from the outside noises, but on the other hand I need to do it, because noise is an issue. But I do not do it because of the accident.

I wear earplugs in trains and buses.

I wear earblugs at work because others are playing radio here.

Anytime I hear music it takes all my attention. I once crushed my car because I was so drawn to music and my own little world.

I can't do anything else if I hear music.

I don't leave home without ear plugs and if I realise I have forgotten them, my anxiety rises quite quickly.

Well, since I last posted on this thread I now have a set of Edz Kidz (black) ear defenders and I love them (I have a small head so these look better than adult ones and really do look like headphones - my husband said so). I have covered up the logos with black electrical insulation tape. I bought them for a specific purpose: the office.

The noise of my colleagues typing really really annoys me. I used earplugs at work to silence that noise, but that meant that I couldn't listen to music if I wanted to. If I was listening to music with my normal headphones or earbuds then I could still hear the typing. Even the sound of my own keyboard bugs me.

So I thought ... if I get ear defenders I can wear them in the office to block out the typing sounds, and if I want to listen to music, I can wear my earbuds under them. And they are brilliant.

And they also send a great "f*ck off I don't want to talk to you" message ... in a way that discreet earplugs can't.

I almost always have headphones on, even when there isn't sound coming through them.

When I'm working I have two styles of headphones -- the kind that just hang on your ear so I *can* hear surrounding noise over my white noise, and the kind that I use at home and at night that go in the ear and block out surrounding noise for when I need to concentrate.

I wear ear protection often, both when playing/listening to live music, and in daily life.

When playing music I have a musician's headset, which is basically a good pair of ear defenders with speakers inside, which I can plug into my synthesizer, which also has a microphone plugged into it that allows me to hear what everyone else is playing, just at a much reduced volume. I also have my instrument, usually a bass, plugged into the synthesizer so I can hear myself play very well, as well as add effects, make and use/assign samples while playing, and other fun stuff.

I also have in-ear musicians earplugs I use both with loud music (when not using my headset), and to reduce noise levels in every day life. I also will often wear earbuds to reduce volume levels and listen to music.

For me, hearing does not give me nearly as many sensory issues as vision and tactile sense do. I cannot stand being hugged -at all-, not even by my own mother. I have a hard time tolerating touches anywhere, even on hands, from strangers, and I often have to rub the spot afterwards, almost like I'm wiping it off, except I often have to repeat it a certain number of times. With vision, brightness gets to me a lot, and I also get afterimages very easily, which causes issues with any light source really, including computer monitors and cell phone screens. It also includes any text - as I read, if the contrast on the page is too high, get afterimages of the lines I'm reading, so I have a bunch of weird colored lines among the text that make it difficult to focus on reading. I also have constant visual snow, and other interesting visual things going on.

I do earbuds+ipod...but I did order a lot of foam ear plugs off of Ebay for like $3. So, I have those too if I don't want to listen to music.

A while back I had the idea to install a little sound system in my motorcycle helmet so that I could listen to music while riding. Well, I never expected it to distract me so much. I dropped my bike due to being so distracted...I ripped out the sound system immediately.

i also must wear earmuffs or i could have outbursts. i have 2 pairs: one is small and comfortable for all day wear. they just reduce noise. the other pair is very uncomfortable but they cancel noise better. those are for emergencys.

I have a big pair of the ones that construction workers wear. They work really well, especially when you have a dog with a high pitched bark that can nearly drive you nuts. I don't use them often unless my dogs are barking, sirens are involved or other noises I know are going to happen. I don't prepare well for the noises that do happen though so it sucks.

I also have a pair of skull candy ear buds that are for my iPhone when I listen to my music. So with my music on they are able to cancel out the sounds that I hear, even people talking around me. I adore them. <3

Only if I know where I'm going is going to be loud

If I'm going somewhere that's noisy or if I'm just not in the mood to hear noise / others talking, etc. I bring along my iPod and in-ear monitors, so I can enjoy some music instead. I have to wear foam earplugs to sleep, otherwise I hear every little sound and can't fall asleep.

nO, not at all, but I keep on wearing ear plugs from my MP3 player.
