I drum my fingers, or sometimes slap a beat with my hands on my thighs, but never for very long. Thats just musical expression.

I twirl my hair a bit sometimes when I'm nervous, but that's just plain old nervousness.

I get shaky leg syndrome but that's just shaky leg syndrome.

I flick my lighter in my pocket alot when I'm in public, but I just like that little burst of heat. And I do often like to hold something if I'm not doing anything with my hands and roll it around, squeeze it, etc, just to keep my hands busy.

I don't think I really stim. Stim-like things but not real stimming I think.

Does anyone have a video showing typical hand flapping?

Since coming to WP I've become reacquainted with it, my full blown autie half brother does it, I have a young cousin that does it when happy, since parking myself here I've found myself standing at the edge of a cliff; wanting to jump back down the rabbit hole but feeling silly and awkward. I've been told I did it when younger but not aware of doing it. I saw another post by a female aspie whose husband found it endearing. I'd agree, if my next if ever gf flapped that'd be gold. Too weird?

I have a lot of stims--various sorts of leg-shaking/bobbing, tapping, twirling my hair, rocking--but I don't think I flap my hands. The rocking came a little later for me; the others have been things I've always done.

I'm no expert, but think everyone stims to some extent; I think it tends to be more pronounced/more frequent with those on the spectrum.

I realized that I stimmed as a child and beat myself up for it emotionally. Now that I quit that, stimming has let loose.

Weird. I used to "run" my fingers and tap them, and rock, but I didn't realize that was abnormal. I would pick at my skin and having blinking or breathing rituals...still do ALL of these things, but now, I don't make it a "moral" issue.

I "discovered" rocking and hand flapping. Its...freeing....and now not so voluntary.

For years I didn't realize I had been stopping myself from rocking. It wasn't until I discovered AS that I felt more like it was a "normal" thing to do. Now I rock all the time. I haven't quite figured out my reason for flapping, whether it's excitement or whatever. I guess I'll have to start paying more attention to myself.

I find I only ''stim'' when I get excited about the people who I'm currently obsessed with. I say their names excitedly, and screw my hands up tight and then knock them together gleefully. But I only do that in front of my mum, my aunt and my grandmother. And I don't do it out in public either.

I used to flap my hands when I was little but stopped until just recently. I'd say it started again about a year ago and since then I've gone through a lot of major life changes.

The weird thing is I didn't remember doing it as a kid until I started doing it again. I can remember the exact day and setting of when I stopped. I was at church and someone asked me why I was doing that with my hands. I was so embarrassed because no one had ever said anything to me like that before.

I don't remember exactly when it stopped but I'm fairly certain there was pressure to appear more 'normal' - the same way some teachers would try to correct my left-handedness. I used to get a lot of grief over the way I would hold my fork when eating, only to find out later that people in Europe hold their fork the way I used to

Interesting - I've just started doing this over the last few months, along with my preexisting clapping this must be kind of annoying for my office mates...

Yeah, I don't know why I've started doing it. I think it was quite voluntary in the beginning. And it felt good so I kept doing it. Less voluntary now though.

Yeah that happened to me too; started rocking side to side one day just because it felt good, now I catch myself doing it when I'm not even aware of it, gets some strange looks from my family to say the least.

That's so weird, I thought I was the only one who did that! It coincides with flapping when I'm really excited about something, sort of a pressure valve that keeps the internal energy under control, I'd never heard of anyone else doing that before now!
