I have had it happen while riding a bike. And promptly crashed into a parked auto! No damage done, but not wise to daydream while riding anything!
I use classic rock music while I drive to keep this from happening. Singing to the lyrics maybe, or cursing the station for playing THAT piece of trash, either way, seem to keep space outs at bay. However, highway hypnosis is a real threat. Especially if you drive in some parts of the Southwest USA. Long stretches of..nothing. The trips seem to go by very fast, for some reason. <g>.
But I am pretty use to going through Life on Autopilot anyway, driving is just another aspect of this. My arthritis can actually help, btw. here. I have to get out & stretch fairly often. This also helps prevent spaceouts.
Sincerely,
Matthew
