Do I have to pick? I have trouble with all noises unless I'm in control so I often wear headphones full of music I like.

for me its inconstant noise like crying baby's and stuff like that. I have no problems with consistent noise, for example I like the sounds of a large diesel engine and can listen to one all day no problem.

I think for me the problem is not the duration but the volume. If it's too loud it scares the hell out of me whether it's consistent or inconstant. I jump out of my skin when a sudden loud noise happens (like motorcycles or sirens). Constant TV or music in the background when I'm working annoy me but I don't freak out since they're not too loud.

Loud people can be quite annoying though.

Expectation, volume and consistency are all important factors.

Sudden noises will get my immediate attention. Don't have to be that loud. The click or static of a PA system, someone dropping a book on a desk. I feel like a dang combat vet sometimes.

Tough question. I can't say I like either inconsistent or consistent noise. Inconsistent loud noise startles me (and because I have sensitive hearing, it kills my ears), but consistent loud noise (such as an argument, maybe?), because of my sensitive hearing and my inability to tune things out, is like prolonged torture,

Sudden, strong, unexpected sounds (explosions, thunder, fireworks).

Noise does grate on my nerves, especially if it's unpredictable. This goes for anything, including the midlife crisis infested boob who lives across the street from bf who can't stop gunning his motorcycle engine at weird hours of the night. Thunder, balloons popping, people arguing, obnoxious guys who can't stop playing with kazoos and clown horns also top my lists of auditory dislikes.

And if a noise is consistent, it can be a nightmare too if it makes me jump from lack of predictability when it shows up(aka things like a siren, alarm, etc). My dog is particularly obnoxious in this regard when he goes off barking at whatever offense lands on the front porch as his cocker spaniel butt is bouncing in the window with a piercing "BarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBarkBark!!" that follows (seriously guys, the doorbell is only there for decoration). And it doesn't even have to be like that either. He even thinks someone is at the door if there is a doorbell on tv or you loudly set your mug down on the table (seriously, he's that dense).

My family does joke that I have "sonar bat hearing". Sometimes I can hear what they're talking about a room or two away with the door closed. And other instances, like at a birthday party 6 months ago, one of my niece's 12 year old's friends' phone was going off with that mosquito ringtone and they were like "you're 28, you're not supposed to hear it!" But I find it obnoxious nonetheless, not because of its high pitch, but, because a lot of phones or the wrong recording doesn't actually represent the actual mosquito sound pitch correctly, but some arbitrary out of tune uneven pitch that I find wall-punchingly irritating.

It depends. I need consistent noise from my giant fan to sleep, so it doesn't bother me. However, something like a barking dog can drive me nuts. I also can get a little freaked out if I hear a sudden loud bang because it makes me afraid that it is gunfire. Having found a bullet hole in my house a few months back (it went through 3 surfaces in a line, and came from the sky, so it had to be one), I am now afraid that anything I hear could be some idiot redneck shooting off their weapon in the sky. I am not anti-gun, but I am anti-stupid.

For me, if I know a loud noise is coming then I get scared. Like when I open Pillsbury Crescent Rolls. I know it makes a loud pop so I have to block my ears. Same thing when I flush a toilet. I have to cover my ears. I also have to cover my ears for fireworks. However, when it's a noise like a fire alarm then I'm fine usually.

inconsistent is worse.....I have a really strong startle response.....and I get really freaked put by unexpected sounds so I chose them as worse. Some continuous noises bother me though......high pitched squeaky one............and for some reason when everything is quiet and you can hear chewing noises or breathing, sniffing noises, these disturb me. Then there's too many noises at once , like in a crowded party, which is just overwhelming. Also there are some noises that don't bother me, I don't but they distract me (like the sound of people talking, or a t.v on in another room, or the sound of typing in class).

For me it depends on the situation.
If I have to talk to people I'm not comfortable with in a noisy room meltdown
Learn to dance with lots of instructions, loud music. meltdown
Motorcycle race, bikes screaming past at full noise happy face
Feeding out line whilst sitting on a boat and the guy beside me reel clicks as he lets out line meltdown
Woman with loud public laugh at bistro  Kill Kill
Baby screaming tits off when I'm trying to talk to sales person need to get away
60 kinda kids stand in unision and their chairs screech wood on wood. need to cover ears
Diesel petrol engine noise Hmm 3rd cylinder sounds like its not firing properly. Valve clearences need adjusting and whats that other noise? Is it bearing knock?
Small bird noise. Nice
Noisy pub. Pool game. What noise?

Oh wow. Flash back. 8O
I used to do that as a kid.
Or hold the button down and release as I bolted out of the toilet

As a kid,, inconsistent noise was much worse - especially echoes.
