I don't like my routine disrupted either. It leaves me frazzled sometimes if the change is sudden, unexpected, and last minute. I have trouble thinking clearly.

Yeah, I really don't like it when someone just comes to my home unannounced. It used to happen often on a Sunday when I was eating breakfast...it throws my whole day off and it takes me a while to feel OK again.

I feel uneasy when I can't plan, getting an idea of what the next few hours and next few days will hold - if I'm reliant on someone else in those plans, I can get quite pissy about it (I do try not to). And disruption of those plans is very unpleasant. I'm getting better at adapting to disruption, and planning on the hoof when needed, but those moments between the old plan and the new one are like being cut adrift in space.

I'm sometimes asked/told that someone might need a favour from me - the favour is no problem, the might is very distressing.

I hate unexpected callers, be it at the house or on the phone.

Yes, this is the absolute worst. The other night, I made a "mental plan" as to how I wanted my evening to go, but I didn't share the plan. I don't even think I was 100% consciously aware of the plan, to be honest. I think I was ashamed of needing to have this plan, so I tried to push it away and ignore it. Well, the night went on, and my husband did his own thing (which had nothing to do with my unspoken plan, obviously)...and I felt myself becoming more and more irritated, but I couldn't express what I was feeling. I started yelling at him for something completely unrelated, and he sat down with me and asked me to explain what was bothering me, and I told him that I couldn't put it into words. We realized that I was experiencing Alexithymia at that moment, so we back tracked to the moment I started feeling yucky, and I made the connection, and realized that I was suppressing/denying my need for having a plan for the evening. In that instant, I realized that I was feeling frustrated (I had a word for it!) and anxious because I was not mentally prepared for the way that the evening would go.

i experience an uncomfortable feeling in my chest, and sometimes worse, to the point of feeling a little panicked. When it gets like that I have a hard time thinking logically for anywhere to an hour to more than a day. The long ones I consider a kind od shut-down, I'll sleep and read quietly in my room. I've always been embarassed (a lot) about it because it doesn't exactly make me a strong person, rather a weak one.

My kids (the only people I have much interaction with) eventually figured out that if they change something that I'm expecting to happen, I'll react in frustration or even anger. I try to not let myself get angry anymore at them because it's illogical, if you know what I mean.

But when trades-people or delivery types unexpectedly change the time or circumstances, I have been known to, um, 'lose my temper very badly. This is embarassing, and quite stupid for me to do, but I can't always control it. In recent events I did explode at a person I'd hired to do something, and my outburst caused a much larger series of problems. So your thread is poignant for me!

Back in February of this year, the bosses came to us and said, "Beginning in three weeks, our schedules will change from 8 hour shifts to 12 hour shifts." Out of the blue, just like that. I was so insulted that they think they owned us and our time that I quit.

That's our problem..we can't stop emotions over-ruling our decisions, you must have had lots of money to fall back on if you could afford to quit just because you din't like the new routine set by your boss.

Did your family still have food on their plates after you quit?

I like to do things in a certain order in the mornings to get ready for work. If I can't do them in that certain order, things will get left out. For instance, if my husband needs the bathroom and I haven't brushed my teeth yet, the alternatives are to stand around outside the bathroom wrapped in a towel, waiting for him to finish so I can brush my teeth, or go ahead and get dressed, and skip brushing my teeth.

I have trouble controlling my temper too, when somebody disrupts my schedule. It's like they have suddenly taken over my day. When those delivery guys showed up an hour early, I cursed them repeatedly (indoors) and slammed things around. I felt appalled at my reaction, yet I couldn't help it. I also hate it when people change things around without warning me. The least they could have done was to call and ask if it was alright to make the delivery earlier!

This so true for me, too. I am glad that we now have two bathrooms, because I can get so thrown off kilter if my husband wants to get in the bathroom and I am in the middle of my routine. I once forgot to brush my teeth due to an interruption.
