What you mean is people willing to debate popular topics. I find this sort of thing as dull as dishwater. I thought perhaps you meant string theory or such.

Here's a novel idea - start your own thread on String theory!

Well, the original poster used the word "intellect" and to me that connotes discussing subjects somewhat more esoteric that religion.

Any discussion can be intellectual really

There's a lot of snobbery associated with intellect - it's just using your brain to think about something deeply in my opinion

Point taken on that one. I can't argue with that.

Lol no, because the cavalry have just arrived on the other thread haven't they? Hence a very satisfying climb-down by you!

Well, no actually. You made your point quite well, and frankly I sitting here trying to picture you sitting there replying to my posts.

Why?

Because you have been so keen on this dialogue, and able to express yourself so ably.
(And because I'm a guy and you're a girl.)

I just like arguing the toss tbh - I thrive on it in case you hadn't worked that out

Don't limit yourself to traditionally intelligent "high IQ" people. Find people who are curious and who like to learn. Those come at all skill levels. And there are plenty of people who are very traditionally intelligent, but who don't like to learn and perhaps even feel that they have nothing to learn because they know everything important already. You won't get a good conversation out of them; just a lot of insisting on their own ideas and lack of willingness to understand yours. Don't get me wrong--people who love to learn can be very opinionated. But if somebody has an opposing opinion, a new idea, or some knowledge they don't have yet, they will learn those things just to be learning them; because, by understanding opposing opinions, you better define your own. I've met people who were "slow learners" to the point of needing special ed, who were nevertheless much more interesting to talk to than most people, because they really enjoyed learning. I've met little kids who know way less than I do, who are interesting to talk to because they have that childish curiosity that many adults have lost.

The nice thing about intellectually curious people of all sorts is that they usually know things that you don't know, even if they are much younger or not really academically gifted, because these are the people who can't help wanting to know, wanting to ask questions; and since there are so many, many things to know in the world, the sheer odds are that they will be able to teach you something new.

yes I agree

You can have interesting conversations with all sorts of people

Academic types are often up themselves and not open to differing opinions, especially those they think aren't as intellectual as themselves

From my observations the quickest witted/funniest people can often be those who are street-wise as opposed to academic
