Do you get on well with children?

I'm 16 (duh, nearly everyone here knows that) and I get along excellently with kids. I've only had experience with two at a time, and I don't think I could handle more. I think it's because I'm childish at heart, but I missed out on a lot of my childhood antics due to my obsessions. Why, just an hour ago, I was having a great time assembling a simple puzzle together. Right now in Holland I have to stay with two kids who can't speak English, however we had a fun time playing hide-and-go-seek throughout the house! (I hid under the bed with Rianne, who is 5)

I also know how to make people laugh, and I know how to push people's buttons, sometimes inadvertantly!

I don't like kids because I can never figure out what to say to them. When I was a kid, I felt like I was just an adult stuck in a kid's body, and I assumed other kids all felt the same. Turns out they don't and they like being treated like kids. I hated being treated that way when I was a kid.

I tend to get along very well with kids, especially when there's only 1 or 2 of them. Anymore than that, and they will get out of hand quickly, and just simply get way too noisey to cope with. I don't talk a lot while interacting with kids, but still have fun with them, and they enjoy me. Children seem to enjoy actions more than just talking. They have so much energy and a thirst for knowledge. When I'm with my nieces (5 and 9 years old), I will frequently get involved with just playing a game of catch with a ball, running around the yard, or just getting on the floor and playing with some toys with them. I got my niece into drawing after she watched me draw some things in fine detail, and she enjoys watching me draw. Overall, I've found out that kids respond well by observing adults more than they learn by just telling them. I think too that this is something that comes from my own learning experiences too, as I've always learned faster by watching and doing versus someone telling me how.

Speak for yourself. I've always gotten on better with adults than I have with my agemates.

All the children in my family love me. I get down on the floor and play games with them instead of talking with the adults. I'm more comfortable being with them instead of the with the other adults. I also get on better with old people then my peers in age.

Kids of any age tend to like me, I guess they can sense that I'm not like most other adults, I'm more willing to sit on the floor and show them how to draw a realistic horse or how to make a car with Legos or whatever...

But they make me slightly uncomfortable, and I have a hard time understanding the little ones' babble ("did she say white mouse? My house? I'm allowed? I like sprouts?...")

...and most little kids like to touch you and sit on you... I don't like to be touched by strangers... Even if they're harmless, cute little munchkins. I'll make an effort to let them hold my hand / sit on my lap, whatever, but as soon as there's an excuse to get away, I do.

Sheesh. I feel almost like a terrible person for saying that...

I prefer children when they are at the age when they are walking, but can't talk properly, that way i don't have to try and decipher what they are saying and they won't think me unusual or try to get me to do something i don't want to do.

You think you've got problems! Try understanding one who can talk, but in Dutch, when you can only understand English!!

I get along with kids, so well, that I often watch them while their caretaker or mother has to go into a store by herself.

I have had to officially by myself watch kids about 3 times. I decided to give up! It is just too difficult. On TV shows, even the WORST babysitters don't have the problems I did. I was trying to watch like 6+ at a time. TWICE at an AMUSEMENT park! You can just IMAGINE how it was.

Maybe you should try learning Dutch. It is ALMOST like german, so there isn't that much of a stretch. It is ALSO almost like danish, norwegian, swedish and even africaans! Africaans is actually derived from dutch. After all, like the others, it is actually a gemanic language. Unfortunately, English is one of the oddest germanic languages, so it isn't nearly as similar.

If you don't learn dutch, you give siblings an advantage, and it may even affect how much you get paid.

And people with AS should, logically, have an easier time with such things.

Well, I ONLY know English, nothing else. No German, no Swedish, no Norwegian, a TINY bit of Dutch, but nothing else. However, my sister Lisa has convinced Rianne to say potato and Onions! (I'm going to see if I can get her to say Garlic (OWA wink:)

Oh, and I'm not paid for babysitting (not that I ever have done that).

They stare at me funny.

I don't really care for small children. I don't really know what to do with them. Should I baby talk? Talk normally? Hold and cuddle them? It doesn't feel right somehow. Even if I did, it doesn't really seem to have a point. I've even been told by a someone I know that she noticed how I act completely "indifferent" towards her newborn, when everyone else (even strangers) would gush all over him, and how striking my attitude was. Hey, nothing against the little guy, but again, I don't get it.

But, once they start talking its okay, because then it feels like there is a point to interacting with them, almost like you're teaching them new stuff every time you talk to them. But, I can only handle it for a little while, after that it gets exhausting.

...then go back and remember how it was like being a teen Aspie o_O talk about being on the wrong planet

hate is such a strong word.

dislike is a bit better.

I am not a fan of children, but I'm learning to like them. Of course whenever I see children, I usually give them a look that should scare them for a long time.

for example a few days ago, at my school, some young children were horsing around near a little water area in an enclosed area. I gave them an utterly evil look that hopefully made them realize the error of what they were doing.
