I have always had it, and I realized that this wasn't normal for maybe two years ago, when someone told me that they actually can experience complete silence. I thought the sounds in buildings and the strain from the sounds outdoors made my head beep. The doctor I am seeing is thinking that I should visit a neurologist via my diagnosing process for Asperger's, so there may be something there. I'm not so sure what you are talking about, though.

Sometimes if I open my mouth really wide, like when yawning, I hear a "ding-dong" noise like a doorbell inside my head. I think it's from pressure on an auditory nerve. Either that or there's a tiny Avon Lady in my head.

My brain gets like that, especially when I'm hypomanic (I'm bipolar).

I was going to say that Strattera blocks the re-uptake of norepinephrine...the OP mentioned a medication that quieted her brain which affected levels of this neurotransmitter. I take it too and I think it works for me. The only other ADHD medication I ever tried was Ritalin and I had a terrible reaction to it.

Did anything help with disorganization? My son is having such a hard time. He was on adderall before, but it only helped with hyperactivity, impulsivity, and intrusiveness, none of which are problems for him anymore.

I am curious if other classes of meds might be more effective than stimulants for disorganization.

I have a noisy brain when I have to deal somehow with humans, because according to my diagnostic papers "patient has a severly decreased processing of social information" and "patient cannot form an idea about the intention of other people".
So human interaction and the subjectively felt pressure that I should be able to process social information in order to function and as it causes anxiety not be able to form an idea about the intentions of people can make my brains noisy, but at other times in non-human-interaction-times it can be very focused as well.

My brain does that too. It's almost impossible for me not to have thoughts, memories, songs, etc. buzzing around in my head. I get this irritating ringing whenever I try to fall asleep and it's completely quiet. Very few times have I felt complete quiet in my brain.

strattera [atomoxetine] worked comparatively well for me in that regard.

I do not recognise anything equivalent to a hum or any kind of audible background sound but I can certainly relate 100% with the over-active thought process interpretation.

It manoeuvres much like a ship. Once I get woken up I start thinking more and more about stuff. Once I get mentally stuck into an interest or off on some tangent I find it difficult to steer my concentration back to important stuff like my work. Slowing the 'ship' down is a longwinded process also. I too, find winding down my thoughts in order to get to sleep almost impossible. I will lie awake, in bed, in the dark for hours unable to stop myself thinking very intensely about all sorts of stuff and can lie for hours without getting even slightly tired and often need just to get back up again as I just feel that I am wasting time which could be better spend researching stuff or organising my photos or vast media library or something.

I have "noisy brain." It never stops; but it's gotten a little quieter since I started taking Seroquel.

Everyone has a stream of conciousness. How intense it is is hard to tell. However, I will hazard a guess that I have a fairly busy mind. It's a double-edged sword though. I can think a lot and I do enjoy it - which is why I look so spaced out a lot of the time. I can take in a lot of information and I often pick up little details and remember a lot of visual information easily. However, I tend to be on edge by default, I fill in the gaps if there is a lack of visual input (scared of the dark still) and my output level is far below my input level.

I have experienced a numbing of the mind when taking anti-depressants. Despite the other issues, I couldn't stand not being me, so I've tried to accept and work with the downsides. Sometimes I get stoned or drunk for a temporary reprieve - I'm much better socially like this too because my brain is quieter.

I couldn't imagine not having a noisy brain.. it's how I work stuff out (and when it's not working stuff out it's acting as my own personal FM radio station).

Definitely wouldn't take drugs to suppress it, even if the doc gave me them.

I find that my medications allow me to be myself. Without them my mind is buried under psychological issues like depression and paranoia. With them I have actually been able to discover myself.

Hmm this is interesting stuff - is it completely related to ASD or ADD though?

Im told i MAY have ADD as well as the Aspergers, and i have a fuzzy head alot too - like telly static. Its hard to focus when im tired due to this.

Might be worth compiling a list of all the meds mentioned on here so i have something to look up :)

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

I am not sure if it is connected or separate from the constant thoughts, etc, whirring through one's head.

I am also not sure whether it is an ASD or ADD thing.

Though on that note, after speaking with a cognitive neuropsychologist he doesn't like either label. He works with EEGs and believes we should be more specific about the exact brain areas affected in each individual and that the labels just aren't specific or helpful enough.

However, my friend agrees it sounds more like her friends with ADD, though, so maybe it IS more in that realm.

It could be like a ringing sound sometimes though as well as this static-y noise.... I just couldn't believe that feeling where my head was so quiet!
