SSRIs and Autism.

I will ask my psychiatrist for PRN benzodiazepines again, see if she says yes this time. In the meantime I use 5mg Olanzapine extra as PRN.

In Tony Attwood's book The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome he says: "However, several adults who have bee prescribed medication to treat anxiety, depression or problems with anger management have described how the medication has 'lifted' their mood, but 'flattened' their enjoyment of the special interest."

Has any of you experienced this?

No.

Zoloft seems to have helped my anxiety, mitigated my depression a bit, and seems to exacerbate some of my autistic tendencies. I haven't noticed a flattening of my enjoyment of special interests.

Of the five anti-depressants I have tried to date, none of them resulted in "flattened" enjoyment of interests. As a matter of fact, every single one of them, including the ones that did nothing for my depression, made me more engaged in my interests. Never less.

It's hard to say. My special interest at the time was playing music and I mostly did that because I was depressed. So yes, I guess it did a little bit, but I did get interested in other things as well and my special interests tend to change over time anyways.

No, my special interests are as big a need for me as ever. I just don't have a lot of time for them due to uni and OCD. I wish I could stay up late or wake up really early so I could have more time to spend on my special interests. Sadly my meds sedate me.

I find that when I'm NOT on SSRIs I feel so miserable that I am not able to focus properly on my special interests.
