Essentially going to bed in my mind is going to purposefully do nothing for several hours at a time, which doesn't appeal.

Like you I've always had sleep problems. I also feel that both eating and sleeping are unfortunately necessary and I wish they weren't as they just take up time from your life.

I absolutely love to sleep, when I am able to. I so dislike *trying* to sleep that I procrastinate until I'm about to drop from exhaustion, sometimes hours after I've taken my melatonin and bedtime herbs. Since getting my little weighted blanket, I've been sleeping better and finding it easier to go to bed on schedule, but it is the greater ease with which I doze off these days that has made the difference.

I absolutely love sleeping. I find myself sleeping throughout the night, waking up for a few hours, then going back for a 2-3 hour nap. What I don't like is having repetitive nervous/anxious type dreams. One I have over and over involves me being back in high school, and a test is given and I have purposely not studied for it and am failing the class. After failing the test and class, I go to look for my car in the parking lot and get lost or have a hard time getting out of the parking lot once I have found my car.

I have a lot of odd feelings and attitudes about sleep and going to bed. First, I love actually sleeping and dreaming. But I don't like lying awake trying to sleep, and I've had insomnia too many times to look forward to going to bed, because of that fear of lying awake.

When I was a kid I hated school, so much that I would purposely keep myself awake too long at night, dreading the next day, in a way procrastinating and putting it off by giving myself more waking hours before the dreaded school day. I've sometimes wondered if that set me up for insomnia later in life, although others in my family have sleeping problems too.

I used to like to read at night, and just keep reading until I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. But that resulted in staying awake too late a lot of times, affecting my work day. I don't read as much fiction now, though, and the nonfiction I read is more in-depth, requiring a fresh mind to understand, so I don't find reading as rewarding at night. The older I get the more fuzzy-tired my brain is by bedtime. Too tired to deal with complicated ideas.

One method I have for helping myself sleep now is reciting mantras (silently). Most of the time that helps, but there are times when I can't handle the repetitiveness of it, and still can't sleep. Fortunately I'm retired now and don't have an alarm clock or a job to get to on time. But I have cats, and a husband, and I'm sensitive to light, so I tend to wake up early no matter what. A lot of days I'm sleep-deprived. Not good! I also don't like naps during the day, they seem such a waste of daylight hours!

It's sort of a vicious circle.

I hate sleeping. It is such a waste of time. If it weren't absolutely necessary, I would not do it.

I can't say if I "love sleep" or if I "hate sleep", as when I'm asleep, I'm not conscious enough to feel anything.....it's just neutral. I do love waking up refreshed, and feeling like I slept well, but sadly, that rarely happens. I often have trouble getting to sleep at night- (I'm a natural "night owl", but unfortunately, in this society, I have to fit into a schedule that goes against my natural rhythms). For this reason, I often go to bed too late (if I try to go to bed early, it makes matters worse, and I just stay awake lying in bed all night). Then, I have to wake up too early, to go to work. After a few days of getting too little sleep, my body just gets accustomed to that, so then I naturally wake up before I really want to (and don't feel good....) Oh yeah, and I also have to go through a whole elaborate routine before I go to bed, to get myself tired and to coax myself to sleep. Sometimes it works, but sometimes it doesn't.

I certainly relate to the feeling of sleep being a waste of time better spent researching or pursuing an interest. I too have had problems switching off and getting to sleep. I will sit at the computer at 11pm and then look up at the clock and it's suddenly 4am. Even when I try to make myself sleep, my hyperactive brain has other plans and refuses to switch off or even slow down.

Always had these problems. Have found that podcasts or audiobooks sometimes help. ...speaking of which, I have to be up at 6am so let's give that a try now.

Actually I enjoy sleeping, but sleeping seems to not like me. Because of several health problems I have it is hard for me to fall asleep and stay asleep, but it's also hard for me to stay awake because I don't sleep well at night. But if I nap I certainly won't sleep well that night, so I can't nap either.

I've never been a big fan of sleep just because of the amount of time it wastes, there's so much web surfing to do and not enough time in the day to do it in. Because of this I usually end up sleeping in til 12 or 1 in the afternoon on weekends which I find to be rather a waste too, not to mention I wind up falling asleep while watching programs about my special interests which is always annoying. Part of me is aware that this whole not sleeping thing is going to kill me, but it's not a big enough part for me to actually do anything about it.

I enjoy getting to sleep in on Saturday mornings (or other mornings when I don't have to go to work or church). When we go camping I love the coziness of sleeping in the camper. As I get older, I find myself going to bed earlier.
