I would estimate that 90% of other men and boys thought I was Gay when I was still in school, and probably 50% thereafter. There is a narrow-mindedness among (particularly) straight men & boys, whereby if another man or boy does not exhibit the perfect scenario of masculinity, he's automatically Gay... Nothing in between; it's it's either all-studly-man or all Gay. I just got used to it and ignored it, and never had any problems other than annoyance and maybe missing out on getting invited to things that polite straight friends wouldn't think a Gay person would want to do, etc. I also found that in several cases, girls liked me but wouldn't consider being interested in me because they thought I wasn't interested in girls. One even told me that she wanted to get to know me, but she refrained because her friends (other girls) told her that if she paid attention to me, people would think she was closet Lesbian and would have hooked up with a Gay boy to hide it.
The positive outcome of all that, was that I have an empathy for the Gay community, and I have many Gay friends because of it. Ironically, I have never been thought to be Gay by any Gay people! It's weird, but only straight boys & men think I'm Gay. I can also have Lesbian friends, as if they are in relationships, their partners aren't threatened by me, as they say they could be if a straight man is friends with one partner in a Lesbian couple.
