i use to mostly walk on my toes. then it was pointed out to me that it was unusual. i now make myself walk on my feet except when i'm going up stairs or if i'm sitting. i've noticed that when i get overloaded or really stressed in someway, i go back to walking on my toes. my issue doesn't have anything to do with a lack of flexibility. i never thought about as trying to decrease sensory input. i'll have to pay more attention to that.

I walked on my toes as a child to such an extent that it shortened my achilles' tendons My right foot is so bad that I can just barely put it flat on the floor, so I still toe-walk a lot on that foot without realizing it. My left foot's not too bad, but not normal. The tendons just shrunk because they weren't being used except in that little tippy toe space.

I wouldn't say I walk on my toes but I do walk mostly on the front part of my foot. I think its because I climbed trees most of my childhood and my early teens. One thing is for sure. It gives you very strong calf muscles. The downside of it is is that it destroys shoes. most of the wear on my shoes happens in the front part of the sole.

This is more along the lines of what I do. Like I said earlier, I walk on the balls of my feet, but also on the outside of it. I turn my ankles pretty often because of walking on the outer side of my foot and then roll up on the balls. And yes it's very hard on shoes. I tend to wear out the outer side of the toe box and the area in front on the big toe. Forget about anyone borrowing my shoes, like to go outside for a minute or something. They can't possibly walk in them. I get a lot of "How do you walk in these #@&% things!?!" I actually like my shoes better after they've gotten very worn -- about the time most people would get rid of their shoes. By then I feel like they finally fit my feet and my walk.

anyone else do this, i only do this with my shoes off and going up stairs, i think i may have short ligaments, i feel like im going to fall down the stairs without being on my tiptoes. it does make my gait look strange i look like im half bouncing as i walk like i have a springs in my feet, i also tend to look like my legs dont bend.

the whole effect ends up with me walking like a giraffe according to my friends. :D

I don't normally toe-walk, but I seem to under certain circumstances. I toe-walk when walking upstairs barefoot. I also catch myself doing it when I try to move quickly while barefoot—it's almost as if I'm too ungainly to be able to walk normally in those sorts of situations. I also find I toe-walk sometimes when I'm really excited about something.

What's more common for me is to stand or walk on the outside edges of my feet.

That's how big cats walk when they want to be quiet. Well, they put the outside edges down and roll in.

When I'm on a hard floor, especially wood, and my shoes and/or socks are off, I walk on the balls of my feet. If I'm on carpet or at least wearing socks, I'm fine.

My kids both toe walk when they are barefoot. They say it "feels weird" to walk on their whole feet. I think my daughter may have once called whole-foot walking "disturbing."

I've toe walked since I was a toddler. My parents did all sorts of therapy and cast contraptions to try and correct it, nothing worked. When people call me out on it (all the time!), I usually just say it's a habit from years of ballet, because that is everyone's first assumption. My son walks on his toes only when he is barefoot, but I think that may change as he gets older. I have even been seen attempting to toe walk (without my noticing it) while wearing 6 inch heels!

I must not be doing it right. I roll on my feet, and I STILL sound like a Clydesdale coming down the hall.

When I walk I roll up on my toes then pick my foot up off the ground slightly then on the down step strike my heel on the ground in a suffleing way. I also turn my foot out and commonly twist my ankle if i'm not careful. Would what I discribe be toe walking or a odd coupleing of toe walking and bad motor skills?

I always have holes in my shoes heels in a few weeks and the soles always break in 1/2 in the middle from my feet bending as I pick up. My feet get very tired and sore quickly however I can't help it, my motor skills are so bad, The whole heel suffle I have appears to be all my own issue.

Can someone discribe who we are suppost to walk anyway? Like are we suppost to pick our feet all at once and drop them the same?

I was a toe walker as a kid especially without shoes. I still do it sometimes when pushing a shopping trolley or walking downhill. As a child it was a sensory craving, it also made me feel like a Tyrannosaurus later, and I remember "wearing" the plastic teacups of a tea playset as 'hooves' when I was going through a major fairytale phase because I wanted to walk like a goat.

He he! Me too! Even when I was a skinny little thing, people would always comment on how loud I walk. Actually, most people know it is me coming down the hall just from hearing me. I have no idea why I am so loud.
