Why do I listen to the same over and over again?

I recently haven't been much of a music listener, but when I do listen to music, it always consists of very limited number of songs. I keep listening to them until they are stuck in my head. I also don't usually listen to music while doing something. I only listen to it when I can just focus on listening.

I'll do this in cycles: one to three or four for a few days, then switch to another group for the next few days, etc.

@redrobin62: love the Fifth Dimension. 8)

Isn´t it quite a normal thing? Music is a language, that bombards the senses and the emotions. It is a sort of concentration of emotions, that can´t be verbalized. It is an innate form of expession in humans.
Isn´t it quite natural to indolge in certain pieces of music, that meet your needs at the time?

I couldn't listen to any those songs. We differ in taste. I listen to rap and some pop.

Yes, I think it is an autistic trait to keep listenting to the same song over and over. Neurotypical people get bored with listenting to the same song/dont get as much out of it. I do the same thing as you. It feels great, that's why we do it :)

Since you're into rap you might understand why I at one point couldn't stop listening to this:

Especially Biggies part 8)

^ Was obsessed with this same song (and others like it...Love Biggie!) back in high school! :D

In the past, I'd get really obsessed with certain songs...and I still do, to a certain extent. It's definitely an autistic trait because it satisfies a need for repetition.

My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I’m no longer involved with the ASD world.

Tupac and Biggie are the best in the game. No one can take their shared crown :)

I have wondered if music is a kind of synesthesia where sounds are perceived as emotions, and all humans have it.

This whole thread reminds me of this song:

"for listenin' too long
to one song
listenin' too long
to one song

Sing me Spanish techno

listenin' too long
to one song
listenin' too long
to one song

Sing me Spanish techno"

That is another way of putting it :)

I will get snippets of song playing in my mind, until I have to hear the song a couple times. If I stumble on an artist I like, I will listen to them predominantly for months on end.

Repetition is often considered to be very much enjoyed by people with ASD, or at least that's what I've heard. That's the best explanation I can give, but I know I do the same.

This is getting weird. We agree on something else. That song is amazing. I requested it at my dad's funeral in 2004, sung by Deanna Durbin on her Ultimate Collection 24 Greatest Hits album. You can listen to her here:

Now stop agreeing with me forthwith.

I definitely like to hear Deanna Durbin's singing. I bought some of her movies on VHS years ago just so I could listen to her songs in those movies.

Now we can go back to disagreeing. :)

I also listen to some songs like few times in a row, I just really like them, there's nothing more than that and there's no other explanation.

I also do this. Repetition, routine, and consistency can make us feel secure, which is why so many of us do this.
